I remember liking this sequel as a kid. I liked the new princesses but yeah shang definitely is... interesting in this movie.

okay when people say "duty" too many times, it starts to sound like "doody" and that, to me, is an important message for us all

I watched Mulan and Mulan 2 back to back and that was a whiplash, emotionally. Still entertaining, just a bit questionable in its messages.

I think Shang was saying Yes to wearing socks while sleeping and Mulan said No.

Idk I feel like Mulan's face was really weirdly animated. The differences are subtle but it makes her look completely different from the original...

the Yes/No question was their opinion on whether or not they liked the sequel's script.

“If you just write out Mulan and Shang” That’s basically my entire enjoyment of the movie. I black out anything with musha, mulan, or shang and just selectively remember all the sweet and fun moments with the princesses and the boys.

The question was probably "is my duty more important than my heart"

I remember watching this as a kid and thinking it was hilarious. The princesses were definitely the best part. I really appreciated that they felt like real siblings that cared about each other.

I think it's important to distinguish between consensual arranged marriages (which most arranged marriages in the modern world are) and forced arranged marriages (which most historical arranged marriages were). Historically, children had very little say in who they married, not just in East Asia but in many parts of the world, because their parents picked for them. In our modern society, where we prioritize bodily autonomy and personal choice, it kinda makes sense that most people view that as a negative practice. It's not the fact that a marriage is arranged that is an issue, it's the fact that a marriage is arranged *against the wishes of the people being married.*

At least the animation, while a little clumsy, is only slightly worse than the original. There’s some sequels that were actually atrocious. I also really just wanted a someone to win me a panda plush when I was younger

This is awful as an adult. But I will say, I really identified with the 3 princesses as a child.
I grew up in a Conservative Christian household. Allot of tragedy happened so my perants doubled down on the fundamentalism- ie we couldn't watch depictions of dragons or monsters in cartoons, and I wasn't allowed to wear trousers as a girl, because trousers temp men and women should be feminine. I was about 6/7.
When they sing no pinchie shoes i got it.

My parents split and I became a teen. My mum was more relaxed in terms of cloths and entertainment but there still was an expectation for me to keep my virginity, marry a traditional Catholic, and have as many babies as God blesses.

I started to related to the forced marriage aspect of the characters.

I wanna be like other girls. Id sing along to it and pretend to be one of the princesses. That was me internalising my doubts and rejection of this values being forced upon me. I wasn't allowed to stay over at friends parties, go on dates or go to concerts. I was so isolated.

In retrospect its culturally shallow and could of been done way better. I watched dramas *made in china* about concubines and princesses and its more complex then what disney portrays. And its badly directed.

But It allowed me to escape from a Conservative destiny my family wanted.

i mean the animation of mulan 2 is like top tier animation in terms of direct-to-dvd disney sequels lmao. cinderella 3 certainly takes the cake tho

The bit about "men are like this and women are like that" reminds me of this joke poking fun at that weird adversarial attitude some people have towards gender.. It was like "men and women are so different !! When men snore they go 'honk choo" and when women snore they go 'snork mi mi mi'" 😭😂

Also I kinda like the character designs for the princesses but they just don't jive with the designs of the original film so it's weird. This seems like a thing that could have been solved with more time/budget.

So many useless sequels. Although I do remember Cinderella's trilogy with some fondness.
