Tony did seem to say his goodbyes in the last few episodes. Silvio in the hospital, Paulie in front of the pork store, Janice in johnny sacks house, uncle junior at the mental hospital and then his family at the restaurant.

My take on the ending is that the ambiguity IS the point. It doesn't matter what happens to Tony. By the end of the series his life is a mess. Most of his friends are dead or in a coma, his psychiatrist doesn't want to see him anymore, he is on the outs with most of his real family, and he is facing an indictment. It almost seems like him dying would be the easy way out.

But whether he dies or not, it doesn't matter. He's finished, one way or another: dead, in jail, or completely miserable and isolated and it's all his fault. He missed every opportunity to find actual redemption.

The whole show was an examination of selfishness, criminality, greed, hypocrisy, and the very real repercussions of that lifestyle; to kill the antihero mafia myth. That's the point of the ending. It's to make you think over who Tony is and how he got where we leave him. That he had everything, ended with nothing, and lives the type of life that COULD end violently at any second is THE final commentary on Tony as a person.

I’m fine with the ending.

But I’ll bet someone has already observed this: It’s not that people wanted to see Tony killed; they just wanted to know for sure what the hell happened to him finally after having so much invested in the character and the series.

I finished the Sopranos a couple of days ago, never saw it before. I think the ending was a masterpiece. All the build up with people coming in the restaurant, the guy glancing at the table and going to the bathroom, Meadow that wasn’t able to park leaving a clear shot on Tony… I was expecting it to happen but I didn’t want it to happen. With the way it ended, it was clear to me that it happened and honestly it affected me and I rewinded the scene a couple of times. The conclusion was still clear to me but the fact that we didn’t see him die gave people hope and it permitted to keep him alive in their memories. That’s why 15 years later, people still talks about it. That he died or not it doesn’t change for me that Tony Soprano will live forever! Greatest performance from an actor I ever saw. James Gandolfini R.I.P.

I liked the ending…..also, it solidified Tony’s weakness of “Pride” which Silvio tried to explain to him. There was no reason for Tony to be out in public during that time. The war wasn’t over yet. He should have stayed in the shadows, which he usually would have, however, his pride got in the way and that’s what eventually killed him.

That we are still talking about it 15 years later shows just how much we loved this show.

In my opinion when the ending cut to black, the members only jacket guy came out of the bathroom with a piece like Michael Corleone in Godfather 1. That would mean Tony got whacked in fromt of his whole family.

I always loved how this show was shot, but my heart is always in season one and two probably, there's something about shooting in 35mm film...and from than on it's still incredibly good just shot with something else. You get a ton of ominous signs all throughout the show's run most of it connecting to the ending there. You really didn't need to see Tony shot all the signs are there already. I'm glad Chase chose to go with history in that ending. Sopranos really is the greatest show ever.

Sorry but that doesn’t sound like a confirmation at all.

20 years later and still nothing has gotten close to this show.

I think the cut to black was more terrifying because it let's us know tony got it in the back of his head right in front of his family David put us all in Tony's shoes and everybody else's shoes who were whacked throughout the show letting us experience getting whacked at the exact moment that tony got it. We didn't need to see Tony get killed because if you look at Phil's death it pretty much shows us how it was gonna happen. David didn't show Phil getting killed in front of his wife and grandkids for nothing it was all there.

Still don’t think he really confirmed it. He talks more about his original plans for the end. You can take what he said both ways, just like the ending. And yes, it’s a great episode and a perfect ending. Best series finale ever by a country mile.

People didn’t want to see Tony killed for justification they wanted to see him killed for closure, we wanted to see him killed for closure because we love him, not knowing what happened to someone you love is worse than knowing the truth

I think the reason everyone didn't like the ending is because it didn't follow the generic Hollywood style of writing. It forced the viewer to finally engage and draw their own conclusion, which was the impression I got from David Chase's writing throughout the series. He continuously challenged the viewer to question their own belief system through the characters and stories being portrayed. It makes sense that the series would end with the greatest challenge to the viewer, which is for them to determine what actually happened.

In addition, I believe one of the overarching themes of the series is empowerment in the face of inevitable negative consequences, in other words, how to deal with fear and anxiety. What better way to have an audience realize their own fears and anxieties than by forcing them to question the unknown?

All the clues and hints were there in the final season and episode. Some say that the girl AJ was with at the mental hospital tipped off NY. She was the model whose picture was up at the salon in which Butch was at. She knew the family was going to that specific restaurant.

We all just wanted more of him Fascinating that years later his character still captivates us

I think the ending was perfect because it left you wondering at first and then it hits you what happened.

It left it for the viewers imagination. Thinking of how Meadow, AJ and C reacted.

There was a scene in the first half of the season I think. Where Tony is talking about what death would be like. It was said everything would probably just go black. That's EXACTLY what happened. Everything went black. They killed him in front of his family because of the New York boss hit where he was killed in front of HIS family.

If Jim Gandolfini hadn't died of a heart attack and Chase could have signed him on for a feature film...Surprise! Tony doesn't get whacked. Maybe Meadow walks in and shouts a warning. Chase left the ending ambiguous so he had options in the future. And one of those options is to still have people talking about, and buying, his series 15 years after it ended.
