Your headphones are ruining the sound of your mixing

Have you ever wondered why your tracks sound great in your headphones but bad in the car and everywhere else?

Well it might not be your fault

Every headphone has its own EQ curve, which will affect the amount of EQ you put on a track.

To fix this, use some software called SoundID and you’ll be surprised at how well your mixes sound on every speaker.

I did this manually for my listening consumer headphones. I found the curve for them on Github, recorded a convolution, inverted it, and now run the headphones through ReaVerb with that inverse convolution. Works amazing!

Even with sonarworks or nx, headphones are difficult to mix in I need my monitors

I feel like it's super easy to overmix vocals in headphones, the perception of levels and effects is so different

You can get a kit with it as well that comes with a calibration mic for your studio monitors. Really helps getting mixes to translate better on other systems.

The headphones eq curve depends by the SPL listening level too, so it's not easy choose It...

One of the best investments ever. While doing a premaster I can hear the 2k area pop out on reference and can match that, including the bass response on headphones, which some headphones are amazing for this!! 🎉

Seriously, is there any engineer here that made a good album using sonarworks ? I'm curious if any one has a reference. (Cause this thing sounds weird to me 😅)

I only do composition and fast volume balancing on my headphones. I don't like it, and I need to save my ears. It's too easy to go too loud on headphones. You're better of with a mono small speaker to get the main balance in the ballpark. Meaning without master bus limiting. Get that feel right before anything, in the entire(!) mix

What I mix on my headphones that always sounds purely shit on my JBL monitors... 😂

Well, Sonarworks kills any soundstage that the headphone was capable to portray, the reverb tails are chopped off, it is an aggressive EQ in my view. But yes, one should EQ the headphones to get a more linear response, also chasing the dragon of a perfect response is BS. But that’s where we are in 2024.

I could never manage to mix on headphones. I could get a way better mix on a pair of jbl mk2s for $400 over any pair of headphones, no matter the cost
