WALL-E Intro

The intro to WALL-E combines an image of a post-apocalyptic Earth with the post-war vocals of "Hello Dolly." It connects the post-apocalypse to the aesthetics of the 50s ("Hello Dolly" is actually from the 60s, but still), the period both of the birth of consumer society and of nuclear paranoia, an image reinforced by the subsequent 50s stylings of the Buy 'n' Large outlets we see a bit later. I'm intrigued as to why this is the style we still reach to, 60 or so years later, when we want to represent the end of the world.

0:43 Took me years to notice that the windmills and nuclear reactors have been built on top of the trash, instead of the trash building up around them. Goes to show just how blind and doomed humanity was before they noticed the sheer severity of the situation and tried to right their wrongs

One of the best and scariest openings ever. Except as a kid you don’t understand how scary it is

I love how they mix the beauty of our galaxy, the stars, and our sun mixed with the dark ominous tone of the neglected cold Earth to create a very morbid and sharp feeling. The music choice was perfect in my opinion, it reinforced what you were seeing in a way that without music, wouldn't of been possible.

1:08 "And we won't go home until we've kissed a girl"
This is the most small, yet satisfying detail they put in when you realise how it syncs up with the story.

I still remember being about 19 years old. My platoon had just returned to our barracks after a long hard day of training in Ft Sill. One of our guys went to the PX and bought this movie. It had just come out. 50 hardcore trained men in a barracks watching this movie was just something beautiful. For a hour and a half we were all just kids again.

2001: A lovable take on Monsters running a corporation
2003: Look at all the sea life living freely
2004: These superheroes are awesome at fighting crime
2006: Look at this awesome race happening.
2007: What a funny situation that little rat is in
2008: THE EARTH IS DEAD AND WE HUMANS KILLED IT

Woah Pixar, kind of a change in your opening narratives over the years. Way to get a grim point straight across.

It's sad to see this once beautiful Earth, now dark and polluted

I like the possible irony of wind turbines and solar batteries swamped by trash. Renewable energy? Don't matter, the Earth is dead. But the best ironic moment was after credits - the BnL logo, as reminder that this great film is also part of mass-production in our world of consumption.

I often annoy my family by making jokes throughout a movie. When I walked out of the theater after seeing Walle I realized... I had watched the entire movie without uttering a single word. THAT is something I'll never forget.

This movie literally predicts the future of mankind.
