This machine plays songs by popping bubble wrap

So many people helped make the bubble wrap music box happen! Here’s a list of build doulas who helped bring it to life:

Stu McConnel did a lot of the engineering and has a helluva brain. Please don’t try to hire him because he now works full-time (!) with me.

"Popcorn" by Hot Butter was made specifically for your machine, and released exactly 50 years ago. You were channeling that song's ghost, I swear, when you decided to do this project. There's a video game called Pengo that uses that song as a soundtrack too. So, that's my request.

I once heard that “If you are the only one doing it, then you are the best at it” Congrants on being the best bubble wrap player in the world!!! Awesome!!!

Finally a valid reason to keep procrastinating to learn the piano.

“There were just so many problems that felt like a staring contest between me and the machine” is the perfect encapsulation of every engineering project in a quote

The fact that even when your inventions don't quite work as intended, they're still a work of genius, is what originally drew me to your channel. But the fact that you felt the need to assure us that your yoga mat used to be much bigger is why I'll keep coming back for more. Love your work. 😂

I think I speak for everyone when I say that we need a colab between Simone and Wintergatan, where they play music written for bubble wrap and marbles!

Fun Fact: Bubble Wrap* was initially created to be Wallpaper.
* Developed by Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes in 1957, Bubble Wrap was initially conceived as 3D wallpaper. Intending to create a new form of household décor, they sealed 2 shower curtains together, trapping pockets of air inside. Despite the novelty, it never truly took off.

i've got to say that one of the biggest draws to Simone's videos for me - apart from being constantly amazed by her creative brain and the investment in every project - is the pure joy you see on her face, especially when she's explaining a new idea or trying out the new invention that came from that idea. i love that. also, it's super transferable; always makes me smile even when it's been a tough day.

Trust me, everyone in any type of engineering has felt the heavy burden of endless problems. Keep going you're an inspiration.

You gave me the vibes of "Wintergatan" and how he spent 5 years to build a similar machine but with metal marbles

I love how this machine turns the concept of sheet music upside down for me. The drum prints a melody onto bubble wrap as it is played yet interpretation of the expended sheet is mostly a total mystery to anyone you showed it to. It reminds me of an old computer programming punch card, yet the plastic wrap can never be "played" again. Well done!

Two quotes that are so relatable to me: "I feel like my mind is like a Swedish summer field. Just like, vast, empty spaces but filled with rabbit holes." and "My math very rarely survives the impact of reality."

I also love how collaborative this was, and how helpful the maker community is! Everybody involved in this rules and I'm so glad I follow channels run by people who just want to help fellow makers shine.

I’m getting some Wintergatan marble machine vibes off of this! It’s so wonderful to watch you work :)

I was waiting for either "Anyway, here's Wonderwall" or a Rickroll.

However, pulling this out to play "Happy Birthday" for one of your friends would be a hoot.

Thank you for being so open about how hard it is to persevere through a project like this. I’m a new electrical engineer working on my first big side hustle project, and while it’s nowhere near as fun looking as this one, it is certainly as frustrating as you made your project sound (the staring contest analogy really hit home). It’s been getting hard for me to keep a positive attitude towards it lately, and with how passionate I normally am about my field of study, I find myself less and less able to keep these dark feelings away from my personal life. Seeing you push through your stuff helps me to feel like I can push through mine, and reminds me that all problems that cross the path of a capable engineer are temporary.

0:34 “I’m going to make a music box, but bigger”
*Wintergatan has entered the chat*
2:07 “It’s not like I’m going to be playing it live to an audience”
*Wintergatan has left the chat*

Great minds think alike! Wonderful to see you tackle new challenges. Loved the music video!

I feel like the Popcorn song is the perfect song for your new instrument.

My brain also goes from thoughts like “this isn’t working” straight to “I’m going to make a Christmas album with this!” That’s probably why I like your content so much
