🤔 I got into the habbit of bringing a small backpack with a couple of books, a notebook, my journal and some index cards. I have my “writings tools” with me and depending on my mood, I mind read, write, take notes, or just stare into space while drinking coffee. But in that backpack, I’m covered.

What really helped me is understanding that it is ok to just stare at a blank wall and think or be bored. It is usually frowned upon and people would rather scroll away for hours instead of doing nothing for a few minutes

Ever since I took a social media break and started reading again I've noticed I have better focus and an improved mood for the most part. There are so many benefits to slowing my scrolling

Lotta so-called Influencers talk about social media detox or social media abstinence but not heard a single one of them talk about underlying emotional needs that might cause this social media addiction. Appreciate that observation Parker. 🎉

Social media is not a problem for me. It's the YouTube that I'm unable to get rid of. I come here to watch sth related to my studies and then I start watching back to back videos. I am in an infinite loop. 😢

🤔 i am 16 years old and since the pandemic got addicted to scrolling. I cant believe that I was 13-14 years old when I started and how fast the past few years have passed. It was social media which prevented me from staying in the present moment and now I have realised that I can't let my life slip away like that. Thanks for the tips.
Really appreciate it. And I am happy to see positive creaters on this platform. Keep going 👍👍

excellent vid. I love the idea of replacing scrolling with thinking. very few people consider thinking as a proactive, engaged activity worthy of time. I call it thinking purposely. going to restart my quotes and wisdom notebook. this was a great vid.

My biggest issue with my social media use is the fact that all of it is on my phone.
I've recently began to use some social media on my computer which has helped me tremendously in cutting down all social media use.
Writing has also helped and I'm glad I chose to "break free" from the scroll.
I also try to use sites like youtube with intent now instead of mindlessly opening the app without thinking of what I want to watch.

Heard this proverb today: “Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows the flowers, not thunder.”

YouTube is a particularly insidious trap for me, if I'm not conscious i get sucked up into video essays and op docs that trick me into thinking I'm still doing something useful.

Great tips! I have such a problem with mindlessly scrolling and feel like I waste so much time. I’ve tried to delete the apps off my phone but it’s so easy to just download them (sometimes hours later after I’ve deleted them) so I needed something different. During night time feeds with my daughter, to stay awake, instead of going straight to Instagram or Facebook, I started a Bible study plan on the Bible app.. such a better use of my time! I may also try to download a book on my phone to read for another option. Great video as always. Keep up the great work!

this video came exactly at the right time i needed it. scrolling and checking my social media has been breaking so much of my focus and attention span.

Hi! I love these tips Parker! They are awesome! I decided to reduce my social media time instead of blocking it out all together. For me, it's all about intention. If I get the urge to just scroll because I want to run away from emotions or my boredom, I will start journaling instead so I can get what I'm feeling down on paper. If I want to go on Youtube and watch a specific video or creater or watch a video about a specific subject, I allow that for myself because it's intentional. The same goes for other social media apps too. I hope this helps someone who feels the only way to stop the infinite doom scroll is to cut them out completely.

Thanks! This video gave me some understanding of something I’ve been doing. Articulating it to me in a way I hadn’t considered before.

Hi Parker, thank you for this video ❤. I have been wanting to reduce my screen time for ages and I have been slowly building in more time for my “screenless” hobbies lately. I’ll schedule some reading time each day, half an hour here and there, I’ll work on a crochet or knitting project, or I’ll write some fanfiction or an entry in my diary. I find it very hard to break the cycle, though. My boyfriend and I very strongly suspect that I’m on the autism spectrum, and help for that is on its way, but we think that that is a big reason for not being able to break said cycle. I’ll definitely take your suggestions to heart and try to implement them. Keep up the good work 🥰

Earlier this year I started using the "focus mode" on my phone to block social media apps during most of my waking hours. (I don't count YouTube as social media for this purpose because usually I have it on in the background while doing other things.) It's been a game changer and yes, technically I can pause the focus mode if I "need" to get to those apps but I've found that most of the time I don't want to! I did use to bring a book everywhere when I was younger so need to build this up again. Right now I have been keeping a book in the glovebox of my car so I can read if I get to work early, and I still am used to bringing books if it's any appointment that might involve a lot of sitting and waiting. 🤔

🤔Love the tip about changing passwords, signing out, and writing it down in a notebook. At a certain point, this wasn't enough friction for me, so I added more layers of friction with a required double authentication step using an app and made the password very difficult to memorize and type. Hope this helps someone!
