damn i needed a video like this. my attention span isn't terrible but i've been starting to fall back into scrolling lately and needed a wake up call. I wish there were more self conscious videos like this on youtube. i'm gonna go do the thing i've been procrastinating over for 30 minutes

The fact that i was bored out of mind and restless by the 3 min mark is all the proof i needed that i gotta start doing what he's telling me to do

In my opinion training ur attention is actually way more fun and fruitful than immediate gratification. Being fully engaged in an awesome book for instance makes me feel peaceful and happy, vs. sitting and scrolling uncontrollably makes me feel sluggish & terrible somehow. Idk I feel like that’s all the motivation u need to train ur attention: u just wanna feel less like garbage 😅

his videos are more better than 15 minute long ted talks

I know bro is saying we have the skills to change but starting isn’t as easy as just saying start so imma give y’all tips on how to start. If starting is difficult for you don’t think of attention like a muscle at first think of attention as a skill and therefore something you can improve. Figure out what your end goal is. You want better attention? Okay why? To feel better, more fulfilled, to help with studies? Once you know why you desire better attention then you can continue on. Start with little goals, I’m going to sit and do nothing for 5 minutes once a day at the same time everyday. Then try 10, 20, 30 minutes. Also scrolling by itself isn’t a bad thing, but being stuck and unable to stop is. If you know you want to scroll, scroll. Set a timer for 10 minutes and say that’s how much you’re gonna scroll for the day. You may have the tools to do better but it’s always always always easier said than done. Start small. Just like excerise, you may not be able to do push-ups but maybe you can do walk push-ups. You can improve, it’s gonna be okay. There is no reason to internalize guilt for not having great focus. It’s like feeling guilty for not being able to play piano, you can always learn how to play piano. Sometimes “just start” isn’t enough and that’s okay. I started wanting to improve my focus, but you can’t just throw yourself into it or you’re more likely to quit (think New Year’s resolutions). Be kind to yourself, you’re improving ur focus for yourself, treat yourself with kindness and respect, you’re only trying to learn.

I heard this from somewhere the other day: “the opposite of addiction is connection” . real connection, to yourself, your family, others in person around you, not online. and I really liked the muscle analogy, I have thought of it like the lazy thing to do is scroll, but it’s not fulfilling. Doing the hard workout is the fulfilling thing because it is hard, but you did it anyway. I need to remind myself that a lot…

It's not just about training your attention; you have to realize that most content you see on social media simply isn't good enough. If the content was good enough, you'd feel fulfilled after watching it, and you wouldn't want to watch anymore. Hence feeling ful-"filled". Many virtual experiences will never leave you feeling fulfilled because they either don't align with your values, they're not good enough, or they're merely imitations of real-world fulfilling experiences. Whenever you're about to watch something, ask yourself, "Is this going to leave me feeling fulfilled, or am I just settling for an imitation of a fulfilling experience I actually want to do?"

My dad's been practicing Taichi, meditation, etc for his whole life basically. What he say about this whole attention thing? You can scroll, you can play games, you can do time wasting things, the only thing that matters if that you can drop it at a moment's notice, whenever you feel like. That's the truest testament to your attention and willpower, as he calls it.

This dude is absolutely no bullshit. I have terrible ADHD and I’m in my junior year of high school right now, so I need my attention more than ever. I know you said you wouldn’t give any tips that would help out but meditation didn’t even cross my mind. I used to love meditating and do it every day. Thanks man <3

Great points man, so many people already have the tools they need, they just don't put the work in to implement what they already know. I'm building a personal development channel as well so I gave you a new sub to help on your grind. Keep it up and all the best!

2:55 dang this was like a smack in the head with a bowling ball. it hit me so hard. i have tons of "self improvement" videos on my watch later playlist but haven't even gone back to watch them. i procrastinate on watching them and i procrastinate on actually implementing them too.. im procrastinating on my whole entire life. what this guy says is true, genuine, and legitimate. im glad i stayed till the very end while staying focused :)

You briefly touch on it but as you say, not enough people let themselves be bored. We as a society have indirectly waged war on the concept of boredom by trying to make stimulation and action as convenient as possible, but boredom is a hugely necessary aspect of life too. Our minds are incredible things with what we can imagine in those moments that we are left alone with our thoughts, and that is where we make those discoveries about ourselves that stick with us.

I didn't realize how bad my focus really was until, I meditated for 3 minutes after this video. My mind feels so empty, yet feels focused.

TL, DR: replace screen time with something better for you and some effort is always better than none

Incase you haven’t see this piece of advice, here’s what helps me: instead of thinking in negatives ALL the time (ugh I wish I wouldn’t [blank]/I have to stop [blank]) try to replace the negative thing with a positive alternative.
For example, I kept going to bed way to late, and I also wanted to get back into reading. Instead of being like “ugh I need to get off my phone” and “I should really read more but I don’t have time during the day” I just started reading before bed, and that worked for me since reading would make me sleepy :) after that, I decided I wanted to work out or do anything active during the day so I would feel tired during bed time.
It’s not gonna be perfect and don’t beat yourself up if you have to ease into it or you have an off day!! Find things you’re interested in replacing your phone time with, and ALWAYS remember 70% or 50% or 30% effort is way better than 0%. It gets easier :)

You're right. I have already heard that 99% of self help information before, but the execution and presentation within this video proved really effective. I've never meditated out of my own fruition before, yet I just did an hour after this video (sitting up straight for that long is usually hard enough for myself). I really hope this is a larger development in a continued effort to improve upon my life. Thank you.

Woahh this video is so good. Very direct and motivating. I first encountered this problem of over-stimulation two years ago which resulted in a huge fall in my mental health. Ive experienced beating it and becoming happier again. Now im falling back into it because school's over but i know its possible for me, and you, and anyone who sees this, to overcome this. Over-stimulation and dopamine numbness is real but some can't be bothered to change that. Thank you for this video that spurred me into action.

Yeah, this video is absolutely valid and correct.
...unless you have ADHD, in which case it's still valid and correct. It's just harder.
But, just like physical training, you'll exhaust yourself too quickly if you go all out. Instead, restrict some things that take your attention away, and start off slow. Go on a stroll with your favorite music, then a podcast, then ambient sounds, and then you realize you don't need headphones anymore.
Start off slow, but start right now. It's better than going hard and giving up quickly.
