The thing with dust, essentially pulverized leaves, is that due to its minimal particle size, the caffeine extraction occurs WAY faster than with bigger leaves. Each sip of powder-heavy mate therefore (especially at the beginning of drinking) has a higher caffeine content than coarse yerba cuts when prepared in the traditional way. This high caffeine intake at once might upset the stomach of some people.

This is why Uruguayan yerbas are stronger in taste than Argentinian ones, because in Uruguayan ones, doe to the higher powder concentration, the caffeine extraction occurs almost instantly after contact with water, as opposed to Argentinian Yerbas, where the leaves need to infuse for a bit in order for the flavor to be strong.

I am Uruguayan and I tend to tolerate Argentinian yerba better doe to its big leaves size and therefore slower caffeine extraction times.

I believe that dust in mate makes it taste bad only if the mate it self is bad because it extracts quickly and you taste more of the bad stuff

What gives u the heartburn is your tolerance to the mate itself, different Brazilian mates/chimarrão have different mixture of herbs, different people uses different herbs not only for flavor but for the "aftertaste", my family uses 2 different brands cause one of them makes my mother have strong heartburns. But both are just powder fine as the other...
