Did I miss something? Inspirational or not, the initial question was never actually answered, nor did the title match the content. Not finding fault in her input--was just not on point. To be fair, it's a much broader question than a 5 min interview can explain, but even so, trying to answer the question by exploring the quality of scripts out there is like blaming the ocean for a ship sinking upon launch. (Makes just as much sense as my argument.) :D

Wendy Kram is always insightful. You can tell she has a lot of experience. A lot.
And she likes Mad Men. Always a plus.

The simple answer is it's incredibly hard to make a movie, let alone a good one. With more money you're given more time and access to better talent but it's still incredibly hard to do.

The reason why so many bad movies get made is because Hollywood is a gatekept industry where who you know is far more important than whatever amount of talent you might have.

You NEVER want to hear yourself saying “I see stuff being made all the time that’s not very good.” If you are thinking that you should keep working & go into your creative channel and make sure that what you have is great. If you can’t make that particular thing great then work on other ideas of yours.

You don’t want to be comparing your work to “not great stuff.” You want to think of what you’re doing & measure it off of the greatest art. What does great art tap into that makes it great. Don’t take advice from people who haven’t made something on the level that you want to make your own art.

Love how she explained things. I've seen beats in movies I won't name that frustrate me, cause they fly in the face of screenplay conventions and "do nots" just because there is a steady market for product. But I still try to hold my scripts to the highest standards regardless. I just feel like it's something you owe to your characters. I don't have a business eye, so please no one take my criticism of Hollywood the wrong way.

Some bad movies are just cheap cash-grabs (Sharknado, I'm looking at you). You can aim for that level if you want, but there are already enough hacky writers in the world. I think the real problem is something she touched on briefly: too many revisions.
You can only make so many changes before whatever you had as a coherent concept (hopefully it was coherent) becomes muddy and dull. And that's just to get someone to buy it! Then the director and producers are going to make further changes to accommodate time, money, actor whims, advertisers, etc. It's amazing that any good films get made at all.
You want to sell a script? Keep it simple: High-concept, simple plot, easily relatable characters, written to a beat-sheet. Best odds.
You want to be a good writer? Write the story you'd want to watch. Probably not going to sell, but you might get lucky - it happens once in a blue moon...

'The Cloverfield Paradox', I'm sure there are a million reasons why it got made. To make the universe of 'Cloverfield' more comprehensible, to make it deeper with a big backstory and explain how the monsters in the movie came to be. My opinion, however, is that they failed on most parts. It was messy and at times didn't make any sense etc. It's not the worst movie I've ever seen, but out of all the movies I've seen this year it's the worst.

Worst movie this year would be the Snyder Cut of Justice League. What a contrived pasting of lipstick on a pig. That movie should’ve been filed under “G” and forgotten.

Even if they do buy your script, how can you trust the filmmakers not to butcher your characters? I'm a writer and there is one market that I don't currently trust, that's Hollywood. You see if my name is going to be added to the credits of a film (ever) then that is a representation to the audience of my skill as a writer. If, in the editing stage, they decide to cut a scene of character exposition out to make way for showing something that charts have shown them are popular with their demographic, how does it now represent my work to the audience? It implies I write weak characters (which won't sell many books).

We’re in the digital age. So a lot of things that use to cost so much is now so easily obtainable. Just a different day and age

I'm kind of confused. Is there two film courage channels uploading the same videos? are they run by the same company? Or is one a phony?

I don't think that asking someone you trust to read your work to be something worth going for. Please enlighten me because I have seen and read enough stories and events of people doing this and they're ideas get stolen, yes stealing someone's work can happen to anyone of us but why let it happen to you and to your brilliant ideas? I hope someone could give an advice on how to do what Wendy have suggested while making sure that your work will still be with you

Horrible movies are made because Hollywood hasn't bought my story.🆑
