I always screw a piece of scrap wood to my post bases to keep it level and square until the concrete cures.

Actually I can't tell you how many of those I've replaced that were all the way rusted through because the bottom of the saddle was touching grade. It needs to be lifted even if just 1/4" it cant be touching

The entire point of that bracket is to keep the wood from touching the concrete and also to secure it to the footing..

I just did that but i couldn't find my plumb bob so i used a screwdriver with a hole at the end of the handle.

They should’ve used the plumb bob when setting concrete tube.

Concrete is way to wet, you want the bracket off of the concrete so the wood doesn’t leech water and rot…
