I have never had a problem with making a mess, and I don't even have a "proper" drain pan. I just use an old plastic dishpan. When I am done draining the old oil, I funnel it back into the jug the new oil came in.

The Stingray is back of it's tail.
Greetings Scotty from the other side of the Atlantic ....

Overhere they force you to go to the dealer for an oil change on the latest generation of diesels, almost no acces to the oil filter without clearing several parts and the oil is specific to the engine because of the specifications imposed by the new euro norm 6 and the mandatory ad blue particle filter.

Several cars do not even have an oilstick to control the oil level nor do they have a water cooling temperature gauge ! Oil changes are scheduled up to 30.000 Km .
Some need a dealer reset of the cpu after replacing a headlight or after a battery replacement ..

Foolish world ..

Thanks for your kind way of sharing your experience and thaks for the smile !

You can also insert a 1/4" tube inside the dipstick tube to the bottom of the oil pan and suck the oil out using a small pump. I did that for years in car and boats. You won't get any cleaner, and no need to remove the drain bolt.

I live in an apartment complex thats anal about keeping their parking lot clean. Now I'll be able to do my oil changes without them bothering me or without having to go to an oil change shop. Scotty saves the little guys money yet again!

Look up "oil extractors" you can pump out your oil through your dipstick. I bought one a few years ago from Amazon for about $50 bucks and it takes the same time as previous oil changes but much cleaner and much easier. Especially if you have a car with an aluminum pan and the factory uses a steel bolt (Chrysler 300m). No more worrying about stripped pan threads.

Where I live the city gives out free oil drain pan/buckets to encourage responsible oil changes. You drain your oil into the pan. Remove the oil filter and place it in the bucket on a divider that keeps it out of the oil and lets it drain. You then pour the oil into the bucket and place the inverted drain pan into the top of the bucket as the lid. It holds 2-3 oil changes before you need to recycle the oil and filters. Most of drain pans out there ignore what to do with the oil filter, the part I've found to be the messiest because those things can hold a decent amount of oil.
