For some extra context, よん is used more than し (at least, when counting in general) because し is also one of the readings of the kanji for death (死), which gives it a bad connotation. It's the same with 9--きゅう is used more (in general) than く, because く is one of the readings of the kanji for suffering (苦). Feel free to correct me if I said something incorrect!

I've been taking Japanese for 2 years, and I always knew that 4 could be 'shi' or 'yon' and yon was more commonly used, but yesterday was the day my teacher said saying 4 like 'shi' sounds like the word for death

Okay, so when she said "Ichi, ni, san, shi" I just heard "Gomenasai" automatically 💀

While I was learning my first 15 kanji, my mom asked me how to count in Japanese. I taught her 1-5 because she said that’s how much she could handle learning (3 strokes messed with her memory) but now every day since she’s randomly, multiple times a day, pointed at me and recited 1-5 in Japanese because she’s so proud of remembering it. Her other favorite words are Neko (she will sing songs to our cat but replace half the words with Neko) and Ganbare

The tailed beasts in Naruto help me to remember how to count from 1 - 10.

Japanese has about 4 separate number systems that it uses for different cases. Native Japanese numerics are preferred for つ "tsu" (eg 9 is ここのつ "kokonotsu"), and there's a few small things like 8歳 (8 years old" being はっさい "hassai" rather than はちさい "hachisai")
