A Weird Rule Among the Samurai #Shorts

Why did the man yell “Mairu!” which means “I’m coming!” before attacking? Wouldn’t he have a higher chance of winning if he attacked silently? This is actually due to a samurai rule during the Edo period (1603-1868), the last samurai era.

During this period, samurai had the right to fight with other samurai under certain circumstances. For example, if one defames someone by embarrassing them in public, or cheating with their partner. But in order for the fight to be fair, the one who attacks must not do a sneak attack. If they do that and they couldn’t win the fight, or if someone snitches on them even if they win, they will have to commit seppuku to take responsibility. On the other hand, it means that if one says “Mairu!” and the opponent loses, the one who attacked will be innocent because the opponent lost a fair fight.

I guess that's where manga characters yelling out of the name of their attack came from.

Very interesting to see how, after decades of tumultuous warfare, violence became very ritualized and symbolic during the Edo period. It's cool to see the difference between styles developed during the Edo period, and older warfare-rooted styles like Katori Shinto-ryu.

So that explains why they always shout before attacking in anime

"When we fight, we face our enemy head on. When we take their life, we look them in the eye, with courage and respect. *This is what makes us samurai. Only cowards strike from the shadows."* - Lord Shimura

It all makes sense now in Ghost of Tsushima on why Lord Shimura looks down on Jin Sakai's methods (Attacking from above, stabbing from behind, using Aconite poison darts, etc.) to drive back the Mongols despite being outnumbered.

Which is why Laertes shouted "Have at you!" at Hamlet before slashing at him in Act V.

I’d also like to add.
People often say japan sneak-attacked Pearl Harbor.
That’s far from the case, Japan had let the Japanese embassy in Washington know that Japan was going to attack. The US got the message, decoded it, somehow took way too long for Hawaii to get the message.
There also many other times when the US had the opportunity to get ready.
But anyways, we all know what happened during the attack. Some probably more than others. But my point is, it was Samurai code to not to sneak attack. Japan never had the intention to sneak attack.

It's okay if you sneak attack, as long as you announce it.

Ah, that's why they hired ninjas, who don't have to announce anything before a fight. Took care of their business silently.

Imagine they set sticky rice traps before they yelled?
It would be interesting!!! Stepping on sticky rice; being immobile!

Samurai code. You must always face your opponent in the eyes. I'm told it means respect and is a way to honor your enemy with a fair fight and to show them you fight them as a warrior, not of emotion like fear or anger.

This rule makes sure that the stronger fighter stays alive.

I guess this is why anime always shout out their moves when using it.

Western culture has similar practices: "On guard", "Defend yourself", "Put up your dukes"

This would make a a good movie. Samurai doesn't say it. Kill in cold blood then seppuku's right after staring the other guy down.

But....a samurai can hire a ninja to kill another samurai without facing him in battle, if he's a chicken.
