A lot of people soak cutting boards in mineral oil. #shorts I think this is the superior way versus just wiping the oil on and wiping the oil off. What do you think? Amazon and other affiliate links are used in this description and they help support this channel.

I’m a soaker but when I wipe…. I like to wipe front to back. 🧻

You should do a test. Take your offcut from the blank and soak one vs wipe one. Cut it on the saw and see which one is moar betterer. Then there's no debate, just facts.

The only problem with that is that you can’t dry it out enough to mail it it’s always sweating

I wipe with a very liberal amount of Howard butcher block conditioner. I do 2 coats and let them sit till the wax is paste-like. Then I take and do a 3rd coat with a heat gun. After they sit for about an hour I buff them clean. It’s worked for me every time.

I think if you have a lot of cutting boards at one time soaking is the way to go because your not waisting oil. But if you only have one then I feel like wiping is good.

Having made 100's of boards, soak is the only way to go then let Drip dry on its side. THEN I apply Allred Board Butter. Zero complaints thus far so...👊

If you have a vacuum pump for doing veneer, put your board in a plastic bag with the oil and pull a vacuum on it for an hour or two. That sucks all the air out of the pores and lets the oil soak in better.
When you remove the board from the bag, wipe it down really well.

I put it on very liberally with my hands and let it sit either a couple hours or even the next day wipe off the excess. So kind of both ways. Then I put on my mixture that I make of mineral oil and beeswax and buff buff

Unfortunately, I made my first set (3 except for a smaller one I made from off cuts) of Cherry cutting boards too big and they wouldn’t fit in any plastic bin I could readily purchase. But I did splash it on there and really let it soak on top of the smaller one that did fit. And I think it worked out really well. However, if I turn this into a cutting board business, I will be sizing them down to 12-12.5” for two reasons: 1. Fits in standard bench top planers, and 2. Fits in the bin where I can soak in mineral oil.

I wipe on a bunch and then wrap in foil over night. I’ll put one or two more applications on throughout the process.

I feel this is the best way if you want to save on oils but still get a penetrating soak.

I oil bath mine (2-3 hours for face/edge-grain and overnight for end-grain). I let them dry then apply my own combination of mineral oil/beeswax. Have yet to have any issues.

Soaker, but I also follow it up with a slow heating in the oven that gets more moisture out and helps the oil penetrate deeper.

I just flooded a 12x18x1.5 end grain board for two hours in 16oz of MO...let it drip dry overnight and only 4oz was left. Yes, the board absorbed 12oz of oil. Now, wax, buff with buffer. Looks great.

Thanks for this, as a new woodworker I have been curious about this.

I haven’t thought about it like that. Now, I’m gonna have to make another one and soak it just to see how it works.

I've never soaked mine. I use a mineral oil/beeswax mixture I make myself. Rub it on thick, let sit for 24 hrs, wipe/buff the next day. Hasn't failed me yet. I also give customers a canister of the same formula to use as needed to keep the board conditioned.
