Why Baby Boomers, Millennials & GenerationX Don’t Exist | Clive Colledge | TEDxBristol

What do Michelle Obama and Nigel Farage have in common? The answer - very little. Despite this they are both labelled as “GenerationX”.

Clive Colledge invites you to forget anything the media or advertising tells you about the generation you belong to. In this timely and candid TEDx talk Clive demonstrates that labeling individuals into generational stereotypes of Millennials, GenerationX, Baby Boomers and Seniors is not only based on false data but leads to unhelpful and damaging divisions in society.

His talk proposes a fresh and exciting approach that encourages connection across generations to create innovative problem solving in society - connections based on values and interests - not age. After all, “We were born to connect. We were not born to stereotype”.

This talk is from TEDxBristol 2017: Dare To Disrupt. In a world of constant change and uncertainty, these are the ‘positive disruptors’ ripping up the rule book to challenge received wisdom, demand better, and transform seemingly insurmountable problems into break-through possibilities and new beginnings.

From making a big splash on single-use plastics, to a global campaign to end unwanted hair-touching, or a revolutionary approach to combining robotics with human creativity, we hope you’ll enjoy and feel inspired by these talks.

LOVE this. Good stuff. I am tired of certain generations categorizing and blaming. It is not some mythical line in the sand, it is about attitude and mutual respect.

As someone who has seen how hurtful stereotypes can be, both in-person and online, this speech was very touching.
I'm still rather young, and even though it's unlikely, I hope that my "generation" is the last to receive such hurtful and divisive generalizations.

I hope that each year into the future leads with more mindful and compassionate people than the last.

My high school modern world history teacher would endlessly make up insults and stereotypes about “our generation” and it showed me that generations don’t actually exist, generation is just something our culture made up to sterotype and talk good and bad about people only from the year they were born when in reality people who are around the same age can have alot of differences

"Voters aged 24 to 49 narrowly opted for Remain (54%) over leave (46%) while 60% of voters between the ages of 50 and 64 went for Leave. Those over 65 were at 64% to leave the EU." website. Most older people voted to leave the EU, he got this wrong.

Up to maybe 2005 i really didnt hear the term "baby boomer" often and up to 2015 the term-slur "boomer". in fact in the 90's if someone said "baby boomer" we could expect that some people in the room didnt even know what it was about.

I stopped the video at 4 minutes and wrote a long essay about this boomer's hippy dippy self-absorbed BS. Then I erased it because I realized I don't really care.
