Just don’t volunteer too quick, law usually obligates some low level of payout if the airline overbooks, typically based on how long you wait for the next flight but without a volunteer the airline will most likely also up what they offer to entice a volunteer.

In my mid 20s, a friend and I would book flights for early in the day on Wednesday before thanksgiving. we'd volunteer to be bumped a few times since they always oversold. A few years we did it we cleared $4000 in air miles, and we used those to pay for our vacation thru the sky mall.
I booked a flight from houston to dallas, hung out in the airport for a day, and ended up with a paid vacation to NY for a week.
