A few weeks ago I did a video about my first attempts of using the Fuji X-T20. I ran in quite a few problems, especially with the raw conversion and the poor quality I got from the X-Trans files.

Hi Michael, I resently bought your tutorials which are great by the way. I have some experience with the Fuji XT20, I own two of those. In Lightroom I use the "Detail" slider instead of the "Amount" slider for sharpening Fuji RAW files. I set the "Detail" in the Sharpening Tab between 50 & 100 and the "Radius" below 1. The "Amount" slider, I set it between 20 and 30. This reduces the "wired" worm like artifacts. For Noise reduction at the same time I set the "Luminance" slider between 10 and 35 depending on the ISO I used. The "Detail" slider (in the Noise reduction Tab) I set between 60 and 80. The "Contrast I leave as is. I'm very happy with the quality of the Fuji Raw files. I sold my Canon 6D and some lenses to by myself into the Fuji system. Except for noise, the Fuji Raw files are better than the ones from the 6D in my oppinion. And you have the Fuji film simulations which you can use in Lightroom CC too.
Keep up the good work on your videos. Maybe buy a GH5 for filming ;-)
Oh and I forgot the "Clarity" slider. I set it between 0 and 10 depending of the picture.

I’m happy you gave Fuji another chance! Yes the XTrans sensor needs some time/software to get used to, but with a prime lens like the XF16mm 1.4 you can get crazy sharp and detailed photos.

Good video, thanks Michael. Nice to see you doing mirrorless & especially Fuji. I switched to mirrorless from Nikon full frame last year. I love the mirrorless/CSC cameras; I'm extremely happy with my X-T2 & X-H1, & recently I purchased 2x Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mk II cameras with a choice of lenses as an adjunct to my Fuji system. Just as a matter of interest, what computer do you use & maybe more imprtantly, which monitor? I know many photographers (though not all) use Apple. I see you're not using Macs & as I'm about to purchase a replacement computer, I would love to know which computer/monitor you use to help you create your incredible landscape images!

Thanks for the video. Ich just ordered a X-T20 and already have Capture One (since 3 years how). 300 € are not that much for 3000 € gear 😉

I used to notice a big difference between Lightroom and the others - but even side by side now, lightroom is almost identical.

At last someone else who is less than happy with Fuji raw files. I have discovered two things relating to sharpness - using the correct F-stop - on the fuji lenses they are generally best at F5.6-F8, compared to what I'm used to with Canon. And I can also get good results using Fuji X Raw - yes I know its not a proper editor but it does a good job of processing raws into jpeg. I only wish Adobe and Fuji would talk and sort out Lightroom with regards to RAF files

I too have seen the weird halo type artefacts around foliage. I use 18-55 lens and thought it was that. What lens did you shoot this sample on please? Could you show your full Iridient settings please?

It's not quite a fair test as you have not shown the final result of your iridient editing. It is clear to me that Capture One is better, but how much sharpening did you do? You say you can probably end up with similar by using iridient then LR. Have you done this and if so how much extra tweaking did you have to do to the files compared to Capture One?
Thanks

Hi. I also use a X-T20 with the 18-55 2.8-4 kit lens. The lens itself has problems going above F8 in my opinion, diffraction shows up early so focus stacking at lower f-number is preferred by me when applicable.
But now we also have Capture one free version. It does not have local adjustments but works very well in my opinion. I also use irrident x-transformer.
Also now we have the x-raw studio that uses the cameras internal converter that shall not be underestimated. Fuji knows how to treat their raw files.
Thanks for sharing.

Does anyone know how I can "simply" batch convert my RAF files to RAW files? I have programs I want to use, but can't use them unless the format is "RAW." Thanks!

Check out rawtherapee in my opinion its demosaic alg. is superior to iridient-x. I apply lens corrections, a film curve (neutral colors, medium contrast (ideal for further editing)), export as 16bit tif and edit normally in LR.

I have a Fuji X-T20. I also tested different converters....Capture One is really good. Using Iridient X Tansformer with Affinity or Luminar is a really good solution, but I still have troubles with Affinity, specially with blue skies that appears with a magenta color cast, that is a problem to me. For me, the actual raw converter that gives the best results is On1 Photo RAW. The latest 2019 version is excellent with my Fuji, with a really improved workflow, compared to the previous versions... Pictures are full of details, the colors are rich and I do not have the magenta color cast experienced with Affinity... You should have try !

You can also try some of the open source programs (Rawtherapee or darktable). They do also a good job with the Fuji files.

Ive spent a lot of time trying to sort out xtrans in Lightroom and other programs. The new Lightroom CC is a lot better at handling these files about much the same as Capture One which I have run alongside to do comparisons. The main issue is still when you sharpen these images and I have finally decided on the following. Lightroom CC with sharpen switched off as default on import and then sharpen the files in photoshop where you don't seem to have the artefact issues. If you have to use irridient in Lightroom use xtrnsformer for dng conversion as Developer takes forever with large number of images. Lightroom is still the only program out there with the cataloguing and editing functionality all in the one program and for many the Xtrans issue was annoying Problems are solved if you just sharpen in photoshop.

I have capture one and it has the most detail but the colours are not great. I found some fuji presets but they are not quite as good as the soc colours. Has anyone used Capture One styles? wonder how they go with Fuji they are quite expensive.

Planst du einen Komplettumstieg, oder soll das mehr eine "Reiselösung" weeden? Seit wann hast du die XT-20?
Lg ein sehr glücklicher XT-2 Nutzer

Very interesting, and the Capture One file looks amazing. Assuming that you have now been using Iridient X-Transformer for a few weeks, could you please say whether or not you find the results to be equivalent to Capture One? Thanks.

I’m considering Fuji X Raw Studio. Free and maybe the best results? But I haven’t tested it yet.

Hello, after spending a long time testing several RAW converters for my Fuji X-T20, I finally ended with Capture One Pro 12 Fuji. It gives a really sharp image from my RAF files and it can correct the diffraction of the lenses. And we know that the XF 18-55mm can be awfull over f/8. I've been a huge fan of On1 Photo RAW. It gives really sharp images from RAF files, but, in my opinion, they are a bit to saturated even when you select a Fuji Style. And also, the sharpening is noisier than in Capture One. I also think that the demosaïcing process in Iridient is a bit too noisy. The RAW converter of Affinity Photo is not very good with X-trans RAF files and Luminar 3 is also not efficient. When I first tested Capture One Fuji Express, I was not impressed and I prefered On1 Photo RAW 2019.2.
But I recently decided to dig into tha soft and discovered that It was really powerfull. So 2 weeks ago, I decided to switch to Capture One Pro Fuji (actually half its price until the end of April 2019). And I've been blown out by it's power and efficiency with Fuji X-trans RAF files. Sharpening process is really good. You really need to push the parameters to generate luminance noise. The color tools are very impressive and user friendly. The rendered colors are really natural. And I can export my file as PSD/16bits to finish the job in Affinity Photo. They really work fine together.
I finally found the soft that gives me what I could expect from my X-T20 sensor.
