The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a history of controversy. It’s been blamed for not acting fast enough. It’s also been blamed for rushing products to market.

The FDA has a tough job. It regulates a powerful industry with a lot of money — and questionable practices. With American distrust for Big Pharma at an all-time high, the FDA’s role is more important than ever.

This is how the FDA could be doing a better job at protecting Americans from the greed of some pharmaceutical companies.

In the US it's called lobbying, in the rest of the world it's called bribing. Same product, different packaging.

FDA abusing confidence actually undermines people’s overall faith in both science and government. Sketchy pesticides, medicine and chemical food ingredients should be reviewed ethically.

Yeah, but the inner city kid selling a couple of joints is the real danger. 🙄

We've been manipulated on an Orwellian scale.

In other countries, pharma isn't allowed to even advertise their products... it helps keep the task of filtering and regulation limited to the medical-scientific community. US govt desperately needs to correct and remove some of their regulations to protect the greater community. :/

As a pharmacy technician, witnessing the prices people pay everyday to live yet another day for conditions they were born with/didn't ask for. It's criminal watching people pay hundreds for epipens in case of an allergic reaction or blood pressure medications. It is so easy to manipulate this market especially with specific drugs such as xarelto that don't have generics and are price gouged thousands of dollars. People with insurance even still have to fork over a copay of a couple hundred dollars for a months supply. People will pay anything to live another day and pharmaceutical companies take advantage of that.

You should do an episode about medical insurance. There’s something really wrong with how it works. Insurance companies bribed hospitals and clinics, ultimately raising the prices of any kind of medical attention, making it impossible to pay for without insurance. Disgusting

The fact that lobbying has been behind the approval of a lot of drug treatments (rather than genuine extensive research), not only contradicts a doctors oath to do no harm, but also creates a lot of the mistrust the public has for medicine that could potentially save lives. If all it takes to get a drug on the market is the right price, that contradicts the very nature of the science of the medical field. People become consumers rather than patients. A lot of Martin Shrekli’s out there - most aren’t vain or immature enough to brag about it on public television, but he’s right about capitalism and the medical industry. Especially in the US. A shame really because those companies do actually need money for R&D, but could cut prices if they weren’t spending so much paying exorbitant salaries to cut corners for these shady approval schemes.

Doctors aren’t required to prescribe this. They are just as guilty

My mom got addicted the same year OxyContin came out. Her addiction destroyed my entire childhood and life. She once gave me one for a headache and I was asleep for almost 3 days straight. I finally had to get an IFP (restraining order) against my own mother in 2017 because that drug made her lose her mind over the years.

See this is exactly why i can sympathize with the anti covid vaccine community. We fucking know what Big Pharma and FDA are capable of and have done in the past. I think its fair to be skeptical of vaccine mandates. I myself have reserached it and know that mRNA technology has been in the works since early 2000s and its been more or less tested so i got both my shots, but i can totally understand why others dont want to.

I dont agree with a lot of things vice puts out but this one I do and I feel the FDA and big pharma are hand in hand when it fits each others agenda and pocketbook

Vice: "Vaccine good, it's FDA approved now."

Also Vice: "FDA is fishy."

Sometimes I don't blame the antivax community because of situations like this. May God protect us.

I used to work as a pharmacy assistant and I saw how many people abused the use of painkillers and antibiotics and most of the times especially if its an elderly person, some doctors would easily prescribe those.People now for the slightest headache instantly take paracetamol without even waiting if the headache will get better in a minute.Even paracetamol is medicine don't forget that it's not a candy.I wonder what would happen if people suddenly would stop taking medicine(except in very serious conditions)for any reason and sometimes just have patience with their system to do its job.A slightest cough and they wanna drink antibiotics, ridiculous. We've become resistant to many antibiotics already and its getting worse.
