Climate scientist: 'There's no place that's safe'

In 2022, climate scientist Peter Kalmus moved his family out of Altadena, California, to North Carolina, to a place he hoped would be "less fiery." His old house burned to the ground in last week's wildfires, while North Carolina suffered the effects of Hurricane Helene last fall. Kalmus tells correspondent Tracy Smith he hopes people are finally listening to warnings about climate change. Smith also talks with amateur meteorologist Edgar McGregor, who warned his fellow Altadena residents to get out as the flames approached; and with John Vaillant, author of "Fire Weather: On the Front Lines of a Burning World."

"CBS News Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for "CBS News Sunday Morning" broadcast times.

The major news outlets could help by demanding answers from the politicians and corporations responsible for this. It’s a crime.

Wildfires are terrifying and they move like a freight train with wind. So glad some people listened and saved their families

These fires are a penalty for listening to politicians instead of experts!

as a pretty hardcore environmentalist for over 30+ years it bothers me that this is framed to point the blame at the automobile. Even had the cheezy shot of the bicycle silluted against in front of the flames. Don't get me wrong, the cars & their lacking cafe standards are adding to the problem, but the biggest contributor wasn't even mention, industrial output. Don't know how much independence CBS Sunday morning has from their corporate owners, but seemed like a glaring admission. That coupled with not hearing from a single mainstream news source about agriculture, like almonds, being grown in an area that doesn't have the rainfall to support the crops, and using a huge amount of a precious resourse, water.

I lived in Europe for a while. People walk more, have better public transport and turn off their car engines when they are not driving. Here people don't care. They say they are paying for that gas and want it cheaper. There is no concern for others, nor is there an understanding how it impacts them. Once I tell people that idling is bad for their car engine some say omg and turn it off. That's as far as it goes.

Why does the Climate Change discussion always turn into how we must pay higher taxes and buy things we don't want to further enrich the wealthy?

In addition to the high risk of new wildfires, seismic activity is also increasing in this area.
In January this year, there have already been 3 earthquakes along the San Andreas Fault, right off the west coast of San Francisco. These events could be signals of a future destructive earthquake along the San Andreas Fault in the coming years.

Follow the water. All of the rivers that provide water to LA and California are diminishing. 1 man owns almost all the California water. There are reports that he is hoarding water. Until better use is made of water, there is no back to normal.

I live in the Great Lakes area and we've been getting more and more tornadoes, when they used to be rare. Things are definitely changing.
