Climate scientists can't agree on how warm it is

I recently read that the world has crossed 1.5 degrees of warming above the pre-industrial level, the limit set in the Paris agreement. Then I read that we crossed it several years ago. Then some climate scientists objected. Why can’t climate scientists agree on how warm the Earth is? Have we already broken the Paris agreement? I have the summary.

I need a T-shirt "Climate scientists can't agree on how hot I am."

Of course, the Paris threshold is hard to quantify in absolute terms. It is the product of politicians and lawyers.

"Let's not quibble over the baseline?"
Wtf!
That's literally the thing that defines the whole concept.

when you have scientists that are terrible at communicating, and communicators that don't understand science, this is what we get. that is why need more scientists that are also communicators.

Mann: “I’ve got 3 degrees and if you don’t agree with me on degrees and antinuclear I’ll block you on Twitter”

Maybe in addition to his three "degrees in Physics", Mr. Mann should pursue a degree in History, to understand that 1970 isn't "the pre-industrial era".

My chainsaw was far too noisy, so i moved silent to the level of my lawnmower.
It considerably reduced the noise my chainsaw makes.

My wife and I usually can’t agree on how warm it is when we’re choosing how many blankets to put on the bed at night.

This video highlights how difficult precise communication is.
No only science communication.

"This is my chart here. You'll see that i have a red line and a black line. The lines are on a chart. Right here. The lines go across the page. I have numbers too ... ."

Thanks for the mid-morning chuckle. "You can quibble over what the right baseline is, so let's not worry too much about that." Rigorous science being applied to climate change.

Whoa, @6:08 she nails it. First time I've ever seen someone on this topic start to dig into the Shannon-Nyquist frequency-limit. For those that aren't mathematicians or data-acquisition experts, the Shannon-Nyquist frequency-limit describes the mathematically proven limit of knowledge that can be extracted from a signal. If you attempt to exceed the Shannon-Nyquist frequency-limit you get start to get garbage for your results.
If you are familiar with video-games or textures or reducing image sizes you might have noticed weird waves that can show up in the image, called a Moire pattern. That happens because the algorithm used to reduce the image violated the Shannon-Nyquist frequency-limit.

I'm glad to see most of the comments here recognizing why no one should cite Michael Mann as an informed authority on climate science.

This year is the coldest in years at least in Sweden.

Scientists tend to be precise. The Paris agreement wasn’t clear about where the baseline is supposed to be, so we can’t really be sure that the 1, 5 is scientific and anything goes. Just select the baseline that fits the desired outcome. Good grief.

It is also a much harder problem than it looks like: due to urbanization, there is more asfalt en stone around temperature sensors than it was in the early days. Maurice de Hond explained nicely how his mother always said that he was born in a very hot summer, but he could not find this on the temperature statistics: they had moved the station in the 70s, and did not analyse how that impacted the measurements.

Thanks for introducing honesty, intellectual rigor, and scientific skepticism into the debate. I live along the shores of Lake Huron and most large boulders with their flattened, ridged surfaces remind us of their prior scraping in a massive glacier. Why did my area warm so much before the industrial era? The following is clear: we are warming up, there is a lot we do not understand about the drivers of climate change, and scientific understanding must contend with political rancor and misinformation from all sides. We attack "heretics" as if in the Spanish Inquisition. We so much need objective, scientific analysis! This is too important to be left to the clerics.

When you mix science and politics you don't get a combination of science and politics, you just get politics.
