Marine biologist breaks down THE MEG

Marine biologist reacts to the movie MEG by Jon Turteltaub, starring Jason Statham and Bingbing Li. This movie explores the idea of the prehistoric shark Megalodon not being extinct. Here I break down this movie through my marine biology glasses. This was very entertaining to do, so I hope you enjoy it!

Suggestions for other underwater movies you would like me to react to?

"That's not very marine biology of them."

All i wanted was for Jason Statham to say "Shut up, Meg" before he finally killed the Megalodon

I have a silly hope that, if we found out Megaladon's actual dimensions, it would turn out to be a relatively small shark with massive buck-teeth.

The movie was based on a book called “Meg” by Steven Alten. He explains in the book how the shark(s) were able to escape the Thermocline. It is actually a very good book. It also explains how Jason’s character knew it was a Meg prior to seeing it from past history. There is a sequel book called The Trench which is also very good. I suggest that you read them both. They are much better than the movie.

The Meg DOES exist, but it's waiting for me to get in the ocean before revealing itself...this is the ONLY reason why I do not surf. You're welcome human race.

Let's be honest.. the main good thing on this movie was that Pippin survived.

I searched "marine biologist reacts to dumb shark movies" and was not disappointed. Please do more! As someone who loves sharks, I always find it frustrating that many thrilers portray sharks as human eating machines. Some scenes just dont make sense.

My favorite part was Jason Statham singing, "Just keep swimming... Just keep swimming."

"They could be hidden anywhere, couldn't they?", "Yes but animals, espescially big animals... leave traces."

"That looks like a star wars ship."

Haha....an underwater station would be cool though! I think this movie is just the marine version of Jurassic probably they'll have many more sequels just like it.

as a diver, concerning the matter of big stations under water with large glass windows, it's in theory totally doable as long as you balance the outside pressure by pressurizing the inside of the station too, if you put 10 bars of pressure . the matter is that for a mere 40 meters depth, you gotta pump your station full of 5 times it's volume of air, if you where to do that at a thousand meter depths, it would mean pumping a thousand time that amount of air. it's currently doable but would take a lot of time and ressources to pump that station full...
once it's filled though, you just have to match the air consumption of the personnel inside, which could be really easy with a large scale air recycler (where you filter out excess co2 and add back the lacking o2). it could be even realistic to get the o2 for the recycler from electrolisis since you got plenty of water around and definitely have a local energy plant.

Jason statham: "when the meg hit the origin and slammed into the vent, those can release millions of gallons, so twenty sharks can come through"

The backstory for Jason Statham's character Jonas Taylor is that he knew it was a Megalodon because he had actually encountered it before. When he was a rescue diver for the navy, something went wrong with one of his rescues when the ship was attacked by a MASSIVE underwater predator. He researched predatory animals in the ocean from the past and present, and the only creature that matched the description of what he encountered was a Megalodon. When he made his claim, however, everybody branded him as a lunatic.

"So glad I'm not crazy!"

I absolutely adore experts criticizing movies touching on their fields! Perhaps "The Abyss" would be a good one?

"It's a megalodon"

The girl who was about to be a squid snack should've responded "bruh they're dead. And at this depth? Lamniform sharks live at the surface and hunt marine mammals, not huge squids."

Soo the meg should’ve become a blob fish?

Cuz of the pressure
