Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant vs Hilton Aspire (BEST Hotel Card?)

In this video, I'll do a full comparison of the AMEX Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant & AMEX Hilton Aspire. Enjoy!

I’ll start by comparing the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant & Hilton Aspire across 3 main categories, so that you can see which credit card would be more appealing to you, based on what factors are important to you when you choose a new credit card.

As an example, one category in which I’ll compare the AMEX Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant & American Express Hilton Aspire, is going to be the specific, tangible credits that can be used to lower your effective fee on these Cards. On the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant, the main specific credits that you’ll get are going to be a $300 Dining Credit & $100 Property Credit. The Property Credit will be harder to use, but even with just the Dining Credit, you’ll be able to lower your effective fee on the Bonvoy Brilliant down from $650 to $350. On the Hilton Aspire, the main credits you’ll get are a $250 Airline Fee Credit, $250 Hilton Resort Credit & $100 Property Credit. I’ll value this at $350 in value ($250 Resort + $100 value from Airline), and with the value from those credits you can lower the effective fee on the Hilton Aspire down from $450 to just $100.

After I compare these cards across 3 main categories, I’ll get into some specific situations of people who would prefer each of the Cards, and ultimately I’ll come to a conclusion on which Hotel Card I think is BEST.

Is the Hilton Aspire or Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant better?

Doing some comparisons. With regards to hotel-level status, Hilton Aspire wins out. With Hilton Aspire, you are automatically in the top-tier hotel status. With Marriot Brilliant, you are automatically in the middle-tier status, kind of an insult to injury in a way. Perhaps one is paying just to have a metal credit card in the Marriot Brilliant while the Hilton Aspire is not. I would figure if you are paying the highest annual fee for a particular brand/chain you should get the top-tier status.

Hmm, very true about these benefits, maybe I have to rethink the brilliant. Hmm, mind however is still not changed but it was close this time.

I know you love the Aspire as a Hilton loyalist as you said, so I’m preaching to the choir.

I love the free night certificates, can basically already get a positive ROI on the Aspire by just doing a little work finding a $4-$500 night.

I agree with you Matt! The Hilton Aspire is still the king in my opinion. Especially for the general consumer. If you’re a Marriott loyalist, you can definitely get a ton of value from the Brilliant, but I think most people would find more value in the Aspire. Great video man!

The Hilton Aspire card is still the better card for sure. But of course, it depends on who is using the card, as you said, since if you don't stay at Hiltons, that card really wouldn't be worth it anyways! I'm just wondering how Hilton is going to respond to the Marriott refresh as I'm sure their thinking of revamping their cards in the near future - hopefully they won't raise any annual fees, but we'll have to see! Definitely still prefer the Hilton Aspire. However it's definitely still a preference as well. Some may prefer Marriott Hotels and others Hilton. Both can be justified for different reasons but if we're speaking objectively. The annual fee and benefits just lean towards the Hilton Aspire. Great breakdown Matt!

Thanks, this was a nice well-balanced comparison. I am more of a fan of the aspire, but they are both pretty amazing cards. For me the aspire diamond status is what really pushes it over the top. Diamond status is easily worth $100 or more per night for every night that you stay in an upgraded hotel room. Sometime much more than that. The Aspire, if you value Hilton stays, is also kind of a stealth great catch all card within Amex. 3x on the “other” category is 1.8% if you go with the point guy’s values. More if you stay at higher end properties off-season. That is pretty solid.
