Marston described the DISC characteristics in his 1928 book Emotions of Normal People, which he generated from emotions and behavior of people in the general population. According to Marston, people illustrate their emotions using four behavior types: Dominance, Inducement, Submission, and Compliance.

Another source: The DiSC model describes four main styles: D, i, S, and C. D is for Dominance, i is for Influence, S is for Steadiness, and C is for Conscientiousness. Everyone is a mixture of each style, but most people tend to fall into one or two main DiSC style quadrants.

There's a book called "Surrounded by Idiots" that breaks the personality types down by color.

We use this at work. I'm a S, C, Personality. I sometimes wish I was less S and C. Although, when you take the assessment it explains a lot. And it's pretty accurate when you observe different people in the workplace.
