What are Swiss people like? Living in Geneva, Switzerland

By popular demand, in this video, I talk about the Swiss people. In general, what are Swiss people like? How is it to live amongst them? If you're planning to move here, it's one of the things you probably want to know, after all, these will be the people you will be spending your time amongst 😉

I now also offer advice & consultation sessions for people who are thinking of moving or planning the move to Switzerland. There’s a lot of very personal and specific topics that I am not able to cover in videos.

For those cases, we can schedule a Zoom/Skype/FaceTime/WhatsApp call (20-45 min) where I will do my best to answer any specific questions you might have.

😉 I hope you enjoy!

It's all about culture. Some cultures destroy what they have. The Swiss cherish and maintain their home, and guard it very well.

Love this--My best friends in California are Swiss and I am considering a move to Geneva--I felt everything you said about Swiss culture insightful and on point!

You’re awesome! I love watching your videos Miko! My mom is Swiss and from Geneva. As I was raised in the US, it is so nice to learn more about where she is from. After I graduate from university in 2023, I plan to move to Switzerland and live out my dreams of enjoying my Swiss citizenship. I will also be spending Christmas with my Swiss family in Geneva this December through January. I’m really excited to explore!

Here in the Swiss German part, they start to arrive 15 mins before the agreed time (for a party, meeting, etc) sometimes even earlier than that. & yes, for the non-Swiss that can sometimes be unnerving. Good points raised here esp. the last one on social & fiscal responsibility. Keep it up!

You can't possibly judge the people of an entire country based on one city alone, specially a country like Switzerland, which has 3x distinct linguistic areas (Swiss German / French / ltalian). Geneva is in the French-speaking area so it could (/should?) be used to talk about ethnic Swiss French only

As a person who lived in swizerland my whole life (in Geneva) and who has visited every canton this place has people from all over the world from migrating columbians to french who feel like it I say that yes real swiss people are very quiet and there are more Swiss people in the middle of the country more of the outside is from neighbouring countries in Geneva French people in Zurich Germans and let’s of course not forget the Columbians

Being late 5 minutes maybe acceptable in Geneva but definitely not in the rest of switzerland. Being 5 minutes early is acceptable, not being late.

Geneva... A French speaking part with mostly foreigners and refugees... You should visit every canton and then do a review 😁

Swiss people trust each other a lot. I know 4 years ago when I was in Geneva, our tour guide said people didn't had locks on their doors. PS: Road to 10k <3

Wow as a swiss (studying political science) i m surprised you see some „communism went right“. True Switzerland has some good social security but it really isnt as extensive as for example in the nordic countries. Switzerland has always been dominated by the liberals and still is. Small fun fact: the FDP (liberal party) is the party that has been the longest holding the government worldwide by a far margine (since 1848 uninterrupted in power) 😉

The Swiss are highly rational people. Not emotional duds unlike in the rest of the world. Your example of Universal Basic income speaks it out all re how Swiss people think. The same holds true of water tax.

hey, been a while since I've commented, youtube stopped recommending me these videos so I had to turn on the bell. great video as always, and I love seeing you getting more subscribers, I remember when you were in the hundreds haha. quick question, does tax come out of your salary in switzerland? or would you still have to pay it normally? I haven't seen much clear information on how tax works in switzerland (if it's cantonal, then specifically geneva aha), thanks miko :)

I am living in Zurich since two years and not made 1 friend. I feel so lonely here. I lived in Israel during my studies and made TONS of friends in only one week. I am packing my bags and leaving for Israel in a month. Cannot wait to go back. Money is not everything. I feel in a rut here in Switzerland. It is not for me.

We also down voted one more payed week off work per year... it’s not about social responsibility but economical responsibility. you have to be serious about it when you’re in a direct democracy. As you say : just don’t through money around, cause it’s not falling from the sky (comes from taxes, so you’re actually paying shit yourself even if it might seem “free” - nothing is anyway). So if you want : be social as long as you can afford it - if we both drown, one can not save the other one. Harsch but true... 🤷🏻‍♀️
