The SFO is a charity organisation run by a volunteer board of directors and the players are members and volunteer their time and effort, expertise and experience to play in several concerts each year. The income and profits from concerts , sales of merchandise along with patronage, legacies, and donations go towards our charitable aims of furthering Scottish Traditional Music and raising money for charities, local and national.

Instituted in 1980 the Orchestra has been performing throughout Scotland, England and has toured close to home, the Northern Isles, Ireland, and as far as America, Canada, China, Australia and New Zealand.
John M Mason arranged much of the music for the SFO and composed many of the tunes that are favourites of the orchestra and the audience. Some of his original compositions and arrangements are included in the playlist.
