The Scottish Fiddle Orchestra - The Flower of Portencross

The Flower of Portencross - Comp/arr. J. Mason MBE
Portencross (The Port of the Cross), a tiny village on the north Ayrshire coast was the departure point for early pilgrimages to the Holy Island. It was also the port from which the ships, bearing the bodies of the Scottish kings left on the long voyage to the burial place on Iona. There still remains the old castle or keep built on the seas’s edge. In this most unusual setting can be found a flower, quite rare in Scotland, a form of wild geranium (Geranium sanguineum).
Soloist, Yla Steven, sets the romantic melody scene and the Orchestra adds the tonal flavour of the sound of the birds, the wind and the ever changing pulse of the seas.
Recorded live at the Perth Concert Hall, Feb 2020.
