Instead of shutting off the water, I ran the bathtub and faucet in the same bathroom and after a few seconds opened the valve on the toilet. It fixed it.

Longer description below:

I shut off the water valve connecting to the toilet and when I opened it up it made the same rattling/foghorn sound. I shut it off again for about 20 minutes (not intentionally, but it ended up being about that long, so I don't know if that had any effect on it). Like a lot of commenters here I couldn't find a separate "cold water" main valve. So rather than shutting off the water completely from the main valve I just turned on the cold water from the bathroom sink and bathtub (in the same room as the toilet in question) and after a few seconds I opened the valve on the toilet and the noise/rattling was gone.

Thanks for the tip. For clarity and even easier tip, I closed the valve. Opened different faucets around house for about a minute. At same time slowly opened toilet water valve and air will clear out until rattle and sound gone.

Finally! Found it. This is exactly what's happening at my house. Sounds like they're moving furniture upstairs haha

you are an absolute legend ! the noise in my en suite toilet has driven me nuts for 2 years, and its all sealed in with sink top, so really hard to get at it, thought it would cost me an arm and a leg to fix, followed your instructions and it worked a treat, I salute you

THANK YOU! Had the same exact issue (knocking of my cold water line going into the toilet) and resolved it in less than 5 min.Don't forget to open up your shower valve and at least one outside hose line (if applicable).

Genius!!!! That man right there!! Thanks so much for this video. This has been driving me nuts for weeks. I wasnt sure if I needed to drain the flush but I did that also with the flush valve turned off. Once all the water was drained I turned off all the sink and bath taps then turned on the flush valve to let it fill, flushed it and perfect. No noise! Great hack!

So glad you posted this vid. brother. I decided before I turned off the cold water main valve, I would just flush all three toilettes at once while running the cold water taps in both half-bathrooms and the main bathroom as well as the cold water in the kitchen. It seems to have cleared the excess air. Thanks so much. What a relief.

I was able to fix the issue. I had to:
1. Turn on all faucets
2. Switch the valve on (and letting the foghorn noise keep going)
3. Wait for the pressure to dissipate (took 1-2 minutes having all faucets on)

Had the exact same problem. If I turned it open 1/4 turn there was loud vibrations. I tried clearing the air out of the pipes twice and didn’t solve the problem. I ended up just turning the water valve 2 or 3 full rotations real quick and it fixed it.

Thank you very much. I have turn off the main valve and opened all cold water faucets, then close all cold faucets, then turn on the main valve. Tried the flush and it worked.

Very appreciative to have found your video. This helped resolved a very loud, vibrating noise during my toilet bowl fill. After I cut off the main water line and relieved all of the pressure from opening all of the cold water faucets like you said, it fixed the problem.

Very useful trick. At first one of my toilet started to have this problem, and then the outdoor garden hose bibbs, and then the other toilet. I realized this is not something caused by the toilet. It has to have something to do with the water pipe. The trick fixed it. Hopefully it won't come back any time soon.
