Although I am a big fan of 12 step programs, I realize it's not for everyone, which is why I want everyone to understand what's really working in the process.

As a long time recovering chronic alcoholic, I need as many avenues to accountability as possible. If I go to the golf course with only a Driver, 7 iron, and Putter, (Three steps) my score is going to reflect that I didn't bring ALL of my clubs, and therefore short changed myself. THAT doesn't mean I'm perfect, and certainly doesn't make me a saint, but in this case "More" is better than Less! Remember, we're not talking about having dandruff, this is the fatal behemoth, Alcoholism! You know why so many people die from this?...because they have no idea what they're up against!

Amber, my daughter is in jail for DUI with her baby. We are trying to send inspirational messages by email since letters are not allowed. Is there any way that I could obtain a printed version of this video for her? I think that she would really appreciate it. Thank you.

The 3 Steps to Recovery:
These notes only cover the 3 things and a few of all the important details this video covers:

1. Connection
- build some connections with people. Often this is a support group, a counselor, etc. Someone you can talk to and build a relationship with someone.
- Get your secrets out, get rid of them and the fear and shame of them
- fix the relationships that are important to you / closest to

2. Consistent
- (consistently) act in a way that is consistent with your core values
- identify your values and create habits, routines action and behavior that is consistent with those values
- do what you say you're going to do when you say you'll do it
- walk the talk, walk and walk

3. Contribute
- cultivate / create a purpose, create value for others / be of service

When you're consistent with your values, build your character back, cultivate a purpose and create value to others and contribute, you become proud of yourself, feel good about who and what you are, and you build up your self worth. And then the need for what you're addicted to becomes less and less and you can gain long term recovery.

The same things that cause anxiety and depression cause addiction: the loneliness, isolation, lack of pride, the dislike of yourself, shame, lack of self worth, and lack of a purpose, future and hope, the feelings of despair, etc.
