The army of the Kaiser lives on - but not in Germany. The Chilean Army still uses the uniforms, traditions, weapons and marching music of 19th century Prussia and also of the Wehrmacht WWII era. Find out the story of how this came about.

Chile is truly a nation with unique military traditions.

Their army is based on the Prussian traditions.

Their navy is based on the English Traditions.

Their Air Force is based on US traditions.

Truly high quality stuff.

When Chile is more German than Germany

When I visited Chile in 2007, I was stunned when we turned a corner in the downtown area of the city of Concepcion to be confronted by the sight of what looked to me an entire column of Wehrmacht soldiers marching. I had to look around a moment to check if this wasn't a movie set, but no, it was real. When you aren't prepared for the sight, it is quite a surprise!

Before dying in Germany, Prussian Commander Emil Korner asked to be buried in Chile, as he said that "Chileans are born soldiers.", 🇨🇱

I visited Chile in 2016 and couldn't help but notice the prevasive German influence there. The highway system has same signage as on the Autobahn in Germany (distance markers prior to exit at 500m, 300m, 200m, and 100m). The traffic lights illuminating yellow briefly before turning from red to green as to ready the drivers into first gear. German breads, cakes, and tortes. What surprised me the most was how extensive imported German foodstuff were stocked in the supermarkets, including Spreewald pickles, Dresdner Stollen, etc. They didn't cost much more than what I would find in Germany given the long shipping distance from Germany to Chile.

- Germany: Oh we can't showcase german pride, It's too oppressive towards minorities!
- Chile: Hold mein bierstiefel...

A woman in a Prussian military uniform, complete with piklehaube... Beautiful. Respect to Chile, for keeping the traditions alive.

I'm German and I'm jealous how German the Chilean army is, compared to the German army. I'm impressed.

I am Croatian and I live in Chile, it is a wonderful country, they acquired the best European traditions, there is a city in Chile that is completely Croatian, it is called Magallanes

Pinochet has nothing to do with these uniforms, they were the same during Allende's presidency too
