The boundary between muffin and cake is something I think about often, and it feels refreshing to hear someone else say it LOL. Today though, 99% of muffins are just cakes we've been told it's ok to eat for breakfast.

Basically,
Muffins = no frosting/icing
Cupcakes = has frosting/icing on top

There are also typically some texture differences with the crumb, with cupcakes being lighter and muffins denser, but things like pound cake cupcakes and carrot cake cupcakes definitely pushes that bound, which is why it isn’t a hard and fast rule. Same with time of day that you eat it, more a rule of thumb than part of the definition.
The frosting rule, though, that’s truth. If you don’t frost the lightest cupcake, you can call it a naked cupcake, if you want, but it is really just a muffin. Putting a lemon frosting on your blueberry muffin? It is now a blueberry cupcake.

Based on the batter it looks like you got a cupcake. For muffins if it looks like it needs a couple more mixes then you are done.

Yeah, when I did research a couple years ago for a random discussion at work on what a muffin is I learned muffins tend to have more flour and oil (not butter) as the base ingredients. They don't usually have eggs. The texture should be a bread like crumb rather than fluffy cakey texture.

That being said, this looks delicious, but it's not a muffin. It's a cupcake. I would try this.
