You lot enjoyed the recent ‘Is your squat a powerlifting style squat’ so here we look a ways down the other end of the spectrum 👀

With lots of knee flexion (bending) in comparison the Olympic style squat has quite a few differences, almost opposites to the powerlifting style squat. 🏋️

It’s important you can recognise which squat style you are closest to as it may help you realise how to refine your technique, most of the time I find people are between 2 styles, and it’s actually counter productive to the benefits both offer.

Favoured by Olympic lifters (shock), and offering better carry over for strongman and athletic performance the Olympic style squat is way more quad reliant than the powerlifting style squat.

The names of these lifts are somewhat unfortunate as they put them into a box in regard to what people may think they are appropriate for.

The Olympic style squat is actually a fantastic builder for the powerlifting style squat, who frequently perform the latter have an imbalance between squat and deadlift and very often knee extension is that issue

Give both a try, having the technique gives you more options for ways to improve. Some of you may struggle with ankle mobility on the squat. Consider raising the heel whilst you improve range so you can nail depth.

Have you tried these before?
