Air Canada, WestJet challenge passenger compensation claims in central court of appeal

If you were one of the thousands of Canadians that had a flight canceled or delayed, a case going to the central court of appeal may affect you.

Canada’s two largest airlines, Air Canada and Westjet, have launched legal appeals challenging two Canadian transportation rulings.

The rulings found that the airlines owe compensation to travellers over flight cancelations or delays caused specifically by crew shortages.

Compensation is meaningless. Regulations need to punish the airlines directly. Flying is not cheap. It is NOT too much to ask that the airlines be accountable to their customers, just as any other business. This needs to be an issue in the next election, an at least one party must take the platform: The planes will run on time.

Cost-cutting and customer service has been brutal lately. WestJet has recently stopped accommodating people with food allergies by still serving nut products on flights, declining requests for alternate menu options, and/or even not making announcements for people with food allergies.

Let’s pay the lawyers hundreds of thousands of dollars to fight for our right to screw passengers, as opposed to using that same money to actually compensate passengers & do what’s right. What a PR nightmare.

You have missed the checked in baggage mishandling, either delayed or goes missing. I m going through this frustration since 13th Oct 2022 when I flew with Air Canada from Pearson Airport to Saskatoon on a non stop. For them it could be just another case but for me it is traumatic. Airline should be accountable for full compensations to make them accountable

If airlines would run their corporations more like a business these issues wouldn't exist. Instead they pay huge salaries to friends and family at the corporate level wasting millions $$.
