WestJet's proposed acquisition of Sunwing vacations and Sunwing Airlines is still up in the air. Shilpa Downton is speaking with an expert in business law who says the merger would be a disservice to consumers.

What these general business degree people are not understanding is that, Westjet and Sunwing both use the same type of aircraft (737 NG) and similar leisure flying structure. By merging them together you can create economy of scale and more streamlined maintenance + pilot training for the companies. Other than the aircrafts itself, these are the biggest fixed costs for airlines. When the merger does happen, they are still likely to keep both brands available as each has their own market and use codeshare to utilize a bigger network. This is to reduce the cost, and strengthen the eastern network with Sunwing to compete with Air Canada and such. -Insiders view on this
