What is Nizoral Shampoo?

Nizoral Shampoo is an antidandruff shampoo used to treat scalp infections of fungi and yeasts. It contains the active antifungal ingredient, ketoconazole. Unbranded ketoconazole shampoos are also available.

Ketoconazole shampoo can be bought without a prescription to treat dandruff, which is a scalp condition that can be caused by overgrowth of the yeast Pityrosporum (Malassezia). Dandruff is considered to be a mild form of seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Ketoconazole kills fungi and yeasts by interfering with their cell membranes. It works by stopping the fungi from producing a substance called ergosterol, which is an essential component of fungal cell membranes. The disruption in production of ergosterol causes holes to appear in the fungal cell membrane.
