I don’t know about the British Isles, but here in Canada (and North America in general), just because a car was carbureted didn’t necessarily mean it had a manual choke. Automatic chokes were ubiquitous on later models - granted, you could still set them manually when cold starting if desired, usually by giving the pedal one solid pump to the floor then holding it down about 1/4 travel while cranking.

Didn't even have to pump the gas... Nice. My old mustang needed a little sip to get going sometimes. When my son saw me pumping the gas several times before turning it over he just say there with a baffled look on his face. He'd already come to terms with the take deck so I knew he could deal with a carb as well. Finally after 3 or 4 times he exploded in frustration and asked why the heck I do that when we leave the house but if we stop anywhere else I dont do it when we leave. It took a while to explain...

That's a good starting R5. Ours weren't that great from cold but once warmed up would run all day

How long do you have to keep the choke on after it starts? You take it off incrementally as you listen to the engine, I would imagine. Were you to switch it to lean abruptly, I would imagine the engine might stall?
