Ex: Determine the Area of a Walkway Around a Rectangle

Can we just get the area of the large rectangle and the area of the small rectangle. Then just subtract from each other and get the answer.

One way is by subtraction
A(small)= (12)(6)
A(small) = 72 in²

A(big)= (2+6+2)(12+2+2)
A(big)= (10)(16)
A(big)= 160 in²

A(big)-A(small)= 160-72

A(walkway)= 88 in²
