🚘 Can You Sand Out Runs In Basecoat and Respray Days Later?

Hey, it’s Tony from LearnAutoBodyAndPaint with another video for the Q&A series. Here’s a question from Jim.

“I sprayed some Shopline JB basecoat, brand code is 4979 ultra violet poly. It’s a factory Ford color. I have some sags and a couple of runs and I haven’t cleared it yet. If I sand out the sags and runs, can I spot them in or do I need to sand the whole thing back down ? It’s been a day since I did it.”

You probably meant to just do touch up with some area, which is yes, you can do that.

I would also suggest that you cover the whole fender again with a coat of basecoat. Sand it those out with 400-grit.

Basecoat isn’t made to lay on thick, so if you’re getting sags and runs on basecoat stage, you’re putting it on way too thick. You just lay it on and it will dry with a flat color and you’re all good.

Again, I would suggest to sand out the run or sag and then re-spray the whole fender again. Then go ahead and lay your clear coat on top of that.

It’s fine if 2-3 days have passed. I recommend sanding the whole area with 400-grit and get it nice and flat. Then, wash the rest of the panel down with 600-grit and coat that whole panel with fresh basecoat.

Follow it with clear coat 2-3 days after or you can even do a week after. You just need to respray the whole panel, put the coat on the rest of the area and you’re good to go with clear coats.

Hey tony I ran out of basecoat and I still have some light spots. If I pick up basecoat cause I respray a day or two later? Should I scuff the basecoat before I spray again? Or can I just tack and clean then spray

First time spraying auto paint from a can. Had the saging a drips. Do I wet or dry sand? Is 24 hours enough time to wait?

Thanks Tony. I've noted that most questions people are asking are thoroughly explained with great examples in the VIP program, excellent pro or diy course, just saying. It's been slow here for the last 2.5 years due to two total knee replacements, torn quad repair, and shoulder reconstruction. No complaints, but it sure has messed with my fun time in the shop. Great channel Tony. Nothing has hampered me when it comes to watching your videos. lol.

Thanks. I am painting my motorcycle fairings and I have a couple hanging because I want both sides painted but 1 panel kept spinning from my fan so I think I painted too close and got some runs but I didn't clear it because I wanted to fix those spots first. I think since the back is good I'll just lay it down this time so I can spray it better since all the other pieces already got the 3 coats of clear they will be ready to polish by tomorrow I'll just sand those spots and throw another coat of gloss black and then my 3 coats of clear.

Thank you for this information. Just happened to me painting a roll cage. This is the most difficult thing I’ve ever painted

I spray Martin senour pro base. You have 7 days before it will react. If you down load the data sheet for your product there should be top coat/re-coat times clearly listed. If you are over time you’ll have to scuff it and lock it down with a 2k primer or sealer. Or you can just wipe it off with lacquer thinner. And start over. I’ve been spraying 35 years and just ran a clear job like I poured it out of the jug. I musta dozed off!! Lol. Point is It happens, stay with it and you’ll get it!!! Hope that helps.

I'm in Florida so it rains here a lot during this time of year. I painted a car a few days ago with a white base coat but I haven't cleared it yet.. can I clear the car a few days after the base is laid down or do I have to do something before I clear? Tech sheet says to clear within 24 hours which is far gone already .

Thanks Tony!!! My first time shooting base and clear. I think I may have laid on the base to heavy or too quick between coats, I got crinkling but not on the whole panel(hood) only on the sides and one side was worst than the other. I had used a Nason 1K sealer and may have put it on too heavy and didn't wait long enough.

If you paint the base day before and didnt have time to clear coat, do you have to respray base again before shooting clear coat so the clear coat bonds better to the base
