The Steam deck showed that Valve might have the chance to develop a console like devices with a unified hardware and that runs a unified front end

As long as they keep online play free, they'll clean up. A nice big F-YOU to all these ridiculous subscription models. I'd certainly get one.

It seems a lot of people who are saying no to the idea don’t realize they’re probably not the target demographic for a device like that. It’d mainly be targeted at the (probably pretty large) segment of people who aren’t interested in building and upgrading a gaming PC by themselves, or paying potentially thousands of dollars for a pre-built PC. The whole point of the Steam Deck, and any potential future iteration of the Steam Machine, is to bring a console-like experience to PC gaming, enabling Valve to sell a lot more games to people who don’t necessarily want to deal with the perceived complexity of building, maintaining, and using a PC gaming rig. Would it work out for Valve? Who knows, but it’s not an inherently bad idea

The Steam Machine was ahead of its time. The average consumer wasn’t ready for it then. A Steam Machine now would definitely shake up the console space.

I already built mine and am still waiting on Valve to release SteamOS 3 officially, and a controller that's basically the steam deck controls. The controller is non-negotiable. Those touch pads are necessary.

If Valve does make a console that runs off SteamOS, I would buy it!

A PC console with limited numbers of SKUs that runs linux and can be modded to your heart's content and that has the simplicity and ease of use of a console is something I'd love to see

A particular console-like feature it needs is the ability to turn the device on with a bluetooth controller, which requires some custom hardware. With my DIY Steam Machine I have to get up and press the power button on the front.

Microsoft and to a lesser degree Sony are facing a lot of backlash right now, so it would be a good time for Valve to release a PC that competes with their home consoles specifically, as it would attract a lot of new people to the Valve ecosystem.

I'd buy one, at any rate.

The "sold at a loss" price point and game optimization of a console + the flexibility and openness of a PC

I’d prefer they just stick with the steam deck and making sure that future versions of steam os work great on peoples desktops so we can make our own living room pcs

The time is right for Valve to make their own living room hardware, the Steam Deck earned them a lot of praise and confidence in the hardware space, and with the Xbox crumbling down, they might even stablish themselves as the new PlayStation competitors if they get it right.
As for the "why", it's so we can have access to our Steam library and SteamOS on high end hardware in our living room.

Bazzite was mentioned in the video but was not given enough credit. All the people here who say they'd buy a Steam console, you can already build your own small PC and slap Bazzite on it. It's worth researching at least. Yes, it is slightly more expensive to get the same performance as PS5 or Xbox but not by much. On the other hand, you can make it as high- or low-end as you want.
Mine runs on AMD 3600 and 16 gb ram on top of a mATX b550 motherboard I got left from my previous main PC. Sold my 3070, got a 7800 XT, added a psu and the smallest mATX case I could find and boom, Steam console. No anticheat bullshit though, if you're into that. But then again, it is not up to Valve to provide compatibility with those. If your favourite game developer really wanted, you'd be running your Fortnites and Destiny 2s on the linux kernel already.

I think they'd just be more likely to make a dock with an incorporated external GPU for the steam deck. Something that can live at home & boost performance there.

I think I’d buy one, and I’m sure I’m not alone on that

It’d be a neat device but I just don’t think it’d be marketable like the Deck and doesn’t have nearly as much of a hook.

It’s the portability that made the Deck a success since the only other competitor at the time was Nintendo. On the console side though you have 2 built-for-purpose consoles on the market and the ability to connect a PC to a TV if you don’t want the walled gardens. A Steam console just doesn’t seem like as good of a sell without the gap in the market like handhelds had.

if it lets you access your existing Steam library with the convenience of a console (and without having to go thru steps like entering Big Picture mode or opening up a streaming app like Steam Link that connects to another device, etc) then that sounds pretty great to me

Were all still waiting for steam os come to desktop pc. If and when that ever happens. Then maybe will see a 1200 to 1440p capable system, 60 fps capable system. Hopefully it’s Zen 3 soc with RDNA3 or better.

Does anyone remember the original concept of modular steam machines? Where components would be given performance gradings, and game settings would be divided into what matches those settings, and you would be able to hot swap a "B grade" GPU for an "A grade" one so you can run your games at the "A grade" preset?

That's me interpreting the idea a bit, but the idea was basically that. Having components divided into performance grades.
