Nipco 5 gallon bead seater.......I was wrong. This is a follow up video. Not all tires can be set with an air compressor alone. This is a handy tool!!

I would call that. A success ! When i was a kid i watched my Dad manually change his snow tires to summer tires in our garage He had a pretty small air compressor at that time and he tried all kinds of tricks. To het those to bead the one i remember. Most was. Him. Trying to wrap the tire with a rope tight enough to Push out the sidewalls In his defense. It took Jim all night but he got it done so he could drive the car to work in the morning My Mom. Must had brewed 20 pots of fresh coffee And carried a cup out to the garage all night long Ive seen these bead Blasters all over the internet and had been curious as to how well they worked or not although i dont plan on doing a lot of tires myself i do periodically change out Various trailer tires once in a while many of my other tires are E rated and i think thats best for the pros to do it with their equipment and knowledge i did however enjoy your video and commentary on how to use the tool

We had one of those Cheetah's (same thing) at a shop where I worked. Even on the large truck tires, rarely did it not work the first time. Much better than using starting fluid! Ebay right now has similar ones for under $50.

A lock on “open flow” air chuck would be a cheap additional tool for difficult to seat beads. Unlike a regular air chuck it flows air all the time, without having to be pressed against a schrader valve, allowing you to remove the valve core and have less restriction through the chuck and stem.

cool trick for seating a bead is use a rachet strap around the center of the tire, tighten it and then hit the tire with a hammer to disperse the tension evenly, then slowly seat the bead and loosen the ratchet strap while you are doing it and it works, I've had to do it many times in Iraq and when doing field repairs when heavy equipment and tires without run-flats lose their seat.

when at kal tire i had one of those smaller bead seaters it was called the bead bazooka or something, my buddy loaded it and positioned it on the rim, stupidly of me i was talking to him and standing on the other side of the tire while he aimed it(out of what i though was the blast range, im a pretty safe worker so this incident surprised me, especially considering ive never seen this happen before out of the hundred of tires i seated at that job. in those six months.),
He let it go and the air went IN the tire, rebounded and flew up in my face, i WAS wearing my safety glasses and looking away but that didnt matter as the air just filled the space infront of and behind them regardless, i felt my eyelids puff out and my eye sockets FILLED with air(felt it all the way back to my retinas), i flew back out of shock and reaction, almost took the balancers shank up my ass and clutched my eyes as they went completely numb for like an hour, after like.. 5 seconds of pure terror i opened my eyes and could still see, but for the longest time after that, with every blink i could feel my eyelids were dragging over the dust embedded in my eyes like sand paper and there was a partically glaze over my eyes for months. it was the single most terrifying experience of my life. im amazed i can still see normally and irritated that it didnt fix my (partially) lazy left eye. if there is a god, i think he saved me that day lol i didnt go to a eye doctor or even report it, you just get fired up in northern alberta for screwing up/missing work or just saying hello. and trust me, saying anything to the government wont help since reputations travel fast in shitty northern towns.

I can try to explain it the best I The bead seater has a 5 gallon tank that is filled with air. When the nozzle is put against the rim and the valve is opened, it quickly releases the whole tank of air in the blink of an eye. Because the the tire and rim are circular (the tire acts as a pocket) the high amount of air get "trapped" and forces the tire bead out and over the inside lip of the rim seating the bead.

Make sure no one is standing in front of the tank when you open the valve to blast into the area between the tire & the rim. I used my bead blaster without considering I was doing anything wrong. My wife was standing about 5 feet on the other side of the tire & the loud noise it made when I opened the tank valve almost burst her eardrums. VERY DANGEROUS.

When using the starter fluid method it acts pretty much the same way except it uses the combustion (of the mini explosion) to complete this process.

@9200j your right about sticking your finger in the bead area while its setting. That could cause serious injury. My finger was very close, but not touching. The video just makes it seem that way.

No. I just like to save money for myself and famil :). What you see in the backround is a tire balancer, but I do have a manual tire changer. I have invested about $1, 200 in all my tire tools a few years ago. With all the tires I bought on craigs list for my car, my wifes car, and my parents car these tools have paid for themselves. Thanks for watching!

I would inflate the tire with the strap on. Just be careful when releasing that strap. I did it with a pry bar and it once flew across the shop. No more pry bar or hammer any more, just pull ropes.

As a tire and alignment tech, 100 psi is WAAAAY too much for this tire! I set mine at 50, maybe 75 psi Max for tires like this. 100 psi is for big industrial tires. Also it helps to remove the valve core. You get more flow from your compressor

Thanks for this instructive video. Apart from this pressure tank I see people using a sort of ring, similar to what you use to bake a cake, that seals the side of the tire off against the rim so that ordinary airflow from compressor can seat the bed. Do you know how that tool is called?

Is the tip of nozzle supposed to be inside the wheel space past where the bead seals or on the outside? Having trouble with mine working. Any advice would help.

Do you lube up the tire before blasting it

Can someone explain to me how does this process works physically? I don't understand how does applying compressed air seat the bead. Also how does lightning starter fluid seat the bead? It just doesn't make sense to me. Thx!

It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye.
