Power of the push

In this video, top coach Emma Harradine teaches us how to use our push shots more effectively.

The push is usually considered a safety shot. But if used with lots of backspin and placed well, it can be a hugely effective weapon.

Emma gives some tips on generating more backspin, placement, timing and variation. And there is plenty of footage, as usual, of me messing up!

In the video, Emma is using this equipment:

Thanks Tom! It gives me some sense of relief to see a player of *your* abilities suffering at the end of Emma's pushes & shots...as I do virtually weekly during her amazing one-to-one coaching 😂😂 Great video, as always. Looking forward to the next ones! 👍🏓

Very often, a good push is preferable to an average top-spin. This is especially true against players with proper technique and training: They tend to be very comfortable counter-looping a clean top-spin, but will get confused by a heavy well placed push, especially if you can add some no-spin ones as well.

Most convincing! However, Tom, why no advice on the angle of the pad while pushing?

My first coach taught me to push like that. It is like a mini chop using a lot of wrist.

I am playing a woman tomorrow who pushes like this. She usually pushes to my BH but I don't really struggle playing against it. She struggles with short push to FH

Excuse me, but they are far from being real coaches. But they are enthusiastic amateurs.
