Ernie Hudson’s character is tied to the original mythos as well. Sam leapt into him in Vietnam. I believe the episode is called “The Leap Home Part II”.

I don’t even care if it’s good I’m watching this for Mason. ❤
I know that’s shallow but I first saw them as Desire in Sandman and fell in love. This is a hill I’ll die on but they provoked feelings in me that I didn’t know I had.
I’m here for them. ❤❤

Great video as usual, Jessie.

You’re absolutely right about it feeling like a network show. It felt very much like NCIS: Time Travel.

Definitely needs to see more banter, and not just with Ian Wright.

I'm glad that you chose to review the pilot episode. I agree that it wasn't a bowl-me-over type episode, but I think it did what it had to do, namely set up the premise of the reboot/sequel without going too far in any direction, and taking a chance on alienating previous fans. I do like where they seem to be going with this new iteration of the franchise. I hope it can carve its own niche, and still maintain the fandom, in the way that Next Generation did for Star Trek, or New Who has done in the modern era for Doctor Who.

I kind of liked that the ensemble cast's only purpose was to line up to tell Ernie Hudson they feel inadequate at their jobs, because Ernie Hudson is awesome and I can totally relate to their transparent attempts to get him to give them a hug.

"Intensely mildly problematic" is such an apt description for original Quantum Leap's vibe. Like, it's always mild, but it's pervasive. Also, all of the "Al! Stop that!" moments

I love the original Quantum Leap so much! It was cool seeing them use that sci-fi setup to really shift the genre and social drama each week. Sometimes, when Sam leapt into a woman, it seemed like they had a few too many cross dressing jokes. But even then, they tackled some big issues in those episodes like sexual assault, sexism, discrimination, and teenage pregnancy. I plan to watch all the episodes of the new show as they come out, but I was a bit disappointed that they didn’t get into any deep issues of the time or even much periodization. The OG show really brought those different historical eras to life, and while I think the reboot has the chance to explore a whole new era of history now that they are leaping around Ben’s lifetime, they really need to spend more time with the historical setting and social lessons in future episodes. Like you said, they had to do a lot of groundwork in this episode, so maybe they can get a bit deeper in future episodes. I also think it would be nice to have more comedy to the show, Sam and Al’s dynamic led to a lot of humor, even when the larger situation was more serious. Some of that is definitely the 80’s goofiness, but maybe this show could borrow some snark from the MCU so that it has a similar feel to it. Levity is important to the show because it allows them to hit harder with the social commentary. The original Quantum Leap is pretty much a comedy drama, but this show looks more like it is going for a sci-fi action feel and I think if the show isn’t careful, it will feel flatter and shallower if it avoids the social issue stuff. I think Ben is a fun character who has some similarities with Sam, and it is interesting to see Addison as both his helper and love interest, but I’m also worried she won’t bring the same funny character clash that Al brought to the table.

Netflix series "Traveller" adapted the same concept as Quantum Leap, but 1000's of people from the future coming back to right wrongs. It's great.

Dr Song stole his wife's job by leaping. Also there isnt just Al's daughter as a connection. Hudson's character was one of Sam's leaps. He was the point man on Sam's brother's patrol where he saved his brother from dying in Vietnam and helped secure evidence that Al was alive and a POW. I believe the episode is The Leap Home Part 2. The character was called Magic because he was good at detecting ambushes.

I remember how the MacGyver reboot (honestly, underrated) kept hinting at MacGyver's dad, at least making me believe that Richard Dean Anderson would show up.

He didn't. Some other guy played Angus, Jr. (A well known actor in his own right), but it felt like a missed opportunity.

This show has already committed to Bakula by using archival footage/photo. They can always recast or deep fake of course (looks at Luke Skywalker), but it would be great for Ben to eventually meet other Leapers, as Sam did. Would be fun if Sam was one of them.

Overall I enjoyed the episode. Will be following it. Was a regular viewer of the original back in the day. Good to see Sam and Al mentioned. Sad that we lost Dean Stockwell last year. He was great on everything I've ever seen him in. Not sure if you've ever been a fan of the original Twilight Zone but he starred in a great episode called A Quality of Mercy. Leonard Nimoy had a small part in that episode also.

When I first heard about this project, I had some MAJOR reservations. After having watched the pilot, I have to say that I'm very impressed with it. It has a good feel to it. Also some very interesting Easter eggs.

I will have to check this out, I watched Quantum Leap as they came out originally when I was a kid. So many episodes of the original are burned into my brain.

I didn't hear ANYTHING about this show until the day it came out, which feels wild and like poor marketing. Hopefully it has some some good episodes in there, but for now I'm in no huge rush to check it out. Thanks for the review!

There's so much stuff coming out right now, I somehow missed they were even making this. I loved Quantum Leap when I was a kid and I will definitely have to give it a watch. I loved the heck out of Enterprise, too. As a fan of both, I admit I spent all of Enterprise in hopes just once, Captain Archer was going to look into the camera and say "Oh boy." I've got my fingers crossed that they do the original Quantum Leap justice while at the same time, I'm not thrilled. All the remakes and or reboouts of1980s network television shows have been mediocre at best.

Now that I think about it, there's actually a big plot tool from the original show that they completely disregarded that could have been a wealth of stories to explore, especially considering the fact that they decided to focus somewhat equally on Ben's character_and_ his team back in the future - In the original series whenever Sam leaped into a person's body - they leaped into his in return in the future.
We never saw what that looked like, but imagine where this could have gone to.. ! maybe at first, before they managed to create a system for it, the person leaping into Ben's body saw the accelerator and thought they were being kidnapped by aliens.. do they remember their time in the future when they leap back? what happens to them if they do? does that create a problem for the "fix" that Ben made? What happens if they decided to act out against the project, and take it out on Ben's body that they are inhabiting? What if Ben is leaping into someone famous, or infamous? (like Sam leaped into Lee Harvey Oswald..) what would that do to the team having to deal with this person? maybe there are some personal feelings there as well.. What if Ben leaped into a younge "Magic" (like Sam did into a young Al..) what would that look like to be confronted with your older self? What happens if one of them escapes while in Ben's body?... I got more..

I never watched the original Quantum Leap but the new version reminds me of a similar show called Timeless a few years ago which I enjoyed. This sequel series definity has the intrigue and ensemble energy of Timeless which makes me excited to see where it goes from here. I wonder if there are any connections between the two productionwise

Was a fan of Quantum Leap after Trek, too. But I watched the show when it was still new, probably around the fourth or fifth season, though I only remember the fifth season as new, also when I was in middle school. I even did the opening monologue for a project in sixth grade.

It was a show that has definitely dated, but I liked that its heart was generally in the right place and it was a show about a hero being kind.

If you like this, did you ever check out Sliders? I watched it while it was on FOX, but I didn't have cable, so I couldn't follow it after season three.

Raymond Lee, BTW. You might be conflating him with Randall Park.

The most interesting episodes were those where he leaped into a woman's body. As a kid I didn't know what in them affected me so, but now I have my guesses. Loved the series back then, even if the American history parts went straight over my head, a Finnish kid in the 80s.
