Thank you Dean Stockwell, for Al and, so many other fantastic characters. You are missed.

My sense of it is that it wasn't necessarily that Scott didn't like not being the lead; but rather that Scott had concerns with what the showrunners were planning to do with Sam. We're in an era now where there's a tendency to take classic characters and trash them to prop up replacements for them; the treatment of Han Solo and Luke Skywalker in the sequel trilogy is a perfect example of this. If the new Quantum Leap showrunners were planning on turning Sam Beckett into a broken old man or a villain, I can easily see Scott choosing to pass on that.

No one will ever replace him, he will have always made the best Quantum Leap shows.

Could you imagine if Bakula was brought back and finally got to go home? The number of people tuning in to see that emotional moment would have done nothing but help the new show.

Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell had an awesome chemistry and combined with the creative crew produced a series that will be a classic so long as any of us are alive who's lifetime paralleled Sam Beckett's. It's a shame that greed prevented this great series from coming back sooner with the original cast and totally shameful that it was cancelled in the first place. So many artistic endeavors have been destroyed by the greed of those who toil not and neither do they spin. It's going to be very hard to become a fan of the new production. I will watch the first episode if nothing else than to honor the memory of Dean Stockwell, who's craft I have been enjoying since my eyes were first opened. You are missed Dean, but I am grateful that we have a lifetime of your work to enjoy for generations to come. Scott, thank you for your generous message about the new show, you are a credit to our society. You will be remembered for showing humanity and kindness throughout your career, I look forward to that career continuing for years to come.

It would be easy to do an episode where Ben runs into Sam sometime in the past where Sam is helping someone and Ben is helping someone else. This way they wouldn’t have to change the end statement of the final episode of the original quantum Leap that Sam never came home. And maybe Sam could pass on some knowledge and experience to the new leaper.

Personally I think Bakula may have felt it wouldn't be the same without Stockwell and decided not to do the show. They were quite a team together and it just wouldn't be right without him as co-star.

Scott Bakula is the finest TV actor ever. Quantum leap, Enterprise and NCIS 👌

If Scott Bakula was willing to do a cameo or just one episode I would like to see him be in the final episode where they finally find in in a leap of sorts and tell them they now have the knowledge on how to bring him home, and of course that is what happens, they get him home putting the closure that Dr. Beckett needed to finally return home.

I love the original Quantum Leap, there will never be a replacement for Sam Beckett or Al. I’m glad they didn’t try. I am 5 episodes into the new series and I think the stories have been good and the cast and crew have been doing a great job. It’s my favorite new show of the year!

"In the script" is the key here, I think.

He was likely given a chance to appear in the opening episode to pass the torch, but not as part of the regular team. Maybe he didn't like the script or just felt the direction they wanted to go with Sam wasn't worth his involvement when he had another project. Where we left Sam last was controversial at best, and bringing him back just to give him a different, possibly worse ending may not have sat well.

I've seen the promo, and the show doesn't look bad, but I don't think the lead and his partner are going to have the same magic as Al and Sam. I'm not particularly excited to see it, but I'll put it on my "will watch if I find the time" list, and we shall see.

NBC, screwed the pooch 20yrs ago by not bringing the show back!! We are still with you Scott, we hope you can bring back Enterprise to give it the ending the show deserves! Good luck with your new show.

Why didn't they just have the new star be the leaper and have Sam be the guide (take Al's role)? It would have been a way to pass the torch to the new generation of leapers, while having a solid connection to the original show. Doing such a thing would break continuity since the last episode said Sam never returned home, but . . . . It would have been better than not having Sam on the show at all!

I rolled my eyes when I first heard about the new show. I knew nothing about it and didn't care to. Then, for some reason, last week I decided to start watching it. I was pleasantly surprised and found myself really enjoying it. It felt just like watching the old show. Pretty much the complete opposite experience of watching new Star Trek. This show feels like it respects the original.

I'm not a hardcore QL fan but it would be nice to see Scott Bakula at least make a guest appearance and close off his story. I like the new guy though.

As the new show has already come out and stated that the program was shut down and Al has passed away, then my thought is Sam is stuck somewhere without his team to help and provide vital information to help him leap. Maybe Al's daughter is working with Song to finish her Dad's quest to bring Sam home?

Yeah I'm going to be one of the fans that skips on watching the new Quantum Leap. The original is very near and dear to my heart and without Scott Bakula it was just not be the same. Oh and I got an Ekster wallet months ago and I absolutely love it!

My suggestion for the new Quantum Leap series is for Scott Bakula to return as Sam Beckett in a recurring role. If they can get 5 seasons out of this, first, it should be one appearance in season 1 to show that he’s still leaping around in time. For season 2, I’d suggest 3 appearances, one close to mid-season, then a 2-part season finale, which results in Sam finally returning home. However, Ben is still lost in time. And from season 3 on, Sam rejoins Project QL to work with the team to get Ben home as well. That would make for a number of guest appearances on a recurring basis for sure.

Honestly I think the loss of Dean hit harder than it thought.. as he said how can you do a QL without Sam or Al....

In time, Scott Bakula may return but he really deserves a few episode send off! Can you imagine the ratings if he Returned to pass the torch, BUT with an actual sentimental story that focuses on his personal losses and positive impact on those he gave a redemptive arc to? Scott Bakula’s immortality is due to his character never leaving the fans’ minds. Like Lee Majors as the Six Million Dollar Man, you can never duplicate who IS the character that never leaves your mind.
