As a former fuel system engineer, Scotty is correct with this recommendation. Unless you want to use the carbon can as an auxiliary fuel tank.

Yep I used to do this a lot thinking that I might as well fill it all the way to the top. Now my gas has to be pumped very slowly about 20 minutes for a tank of gas. This is a true statement listen to this mechanic he knows what he's talking about

Please don't be stupid and fill your gas all the way you can see it from outside. My roommate does this and never listens to any advice and ruined his old car.

Extremely good advice on NOT overfilling with gas..worked on the old cars but not on the new cars..

Agreed. I always overfilled my 2010 Silverado, when the gas price was lower than usual and now, the EVAP valve is stuck open. I can live with that check engine light on.

Is this for newer cars, because my dad always fills the van up after the pump shuts off and has never had to replace that part. We've had the van for about 14 years now.

True thing, except that I have had vehicles where the splashback would make the nozzles shut off when the tank is still down a quarter tank.
