Years ago I worked for the state and they had a Plymouth Duster come back from motor pool, which was a good distance away and the oil light was on. That car took five quarts of oil, because they forgot to put oil in after an oil change. Those slant sixes could take a lot more abuse than the newer engines can.

I’m a mechanic of 7 years. I’ve seen Toyota Solara and Corolla running with two quarts only. I’m amazed how Toyota engineers are able to do this. I wouldn’t try it with my RSX that I’ve been driving for 8 years.

Remember to check your manual to see how to check the level. For my Toyotas, you’re supposed to get to operating temp and then shut the car off and then check it like five or ten mins later.

Check your oil every day before embarking on your drives. If you have an older car, look under it, and make sure you don’t have any new leaks from oil, coolant or transmission.
