This series was written and made in 1991. Akira based it off of "Terminator 2: Judgement Day, " because that year it was a famous movie worldwide. If you'll notice Trunks' hairstyle is the same as the young John Connor's. I mean time travel into the past and saying that the future is being devastated by cyborgs. Pretty similar.
