I feel torn about it. I am glad they are making another Wizard of oz adaptation but I'm also concerned that they're going to ruin it as I feel they won't bring anything new to it.

I think only way a remake of Oz would have any shot at working is this adaptation would have to be 100% faithful to the original novel. Therefore it wouldn’t fare as a single movie, but rather a 2 or 3 part mini series distributed by someone like Netflix.

The adaptation would also have to be told very differently. Instead of a dramatic musical with comic undertones like the 1939 film, this adaptation would have to be shot as a straight drama with some horror undertones (the original book is quite dark). The adaptation would also need elements of a period piece in it since the story takes place in the 1900s. So the Kanas scenes would have to almost have a Little House on the Prairie atmosphere to it, with horse and buggy’s. There would be a little more room for artistic freedom in the Oz scenes, but they really couldn’t stray too far away from the 1900s period with the outfits and technology advancements of the time. No room for many comedic elements.

Casting would be the most difficult part since the original roles, especially Dorothy, is so immortalized with Judy Garland. The part of Dorothy would need to be played by a new and unknown actress. She would have to have elements of young Fairuza Balk as Dorothy (bravery and shrewdness), a young Melissa Gilbert as Laura Ingalls (wholesomeness), and a young Taylor Momsen as Cindy Lou Who (kindness).

Thats just scratching the surface, there’s more to it than just that.

Yeah, no. No thanks, they'll only ruin it. The original Judy Garland version will always be the ONLY version to me. ^^ And it's not a musical?! But that's the entire point of it! T_T

Honestly if I am interested in a remake of this, I hope it’s gonna be based on the books

Every remake and reinterpretation of the Oz stories since the 1939 classic has bombed ( except for THE WIZ on Broadway in 1975). Lightning rarely strikes twice. THE WIZARD OF OZ is still pure magic for intangible reasons that no other film has matched or will ever match. It’s best to leave the material alone.

“Reimagining” Means It’s going to be all black and trans characters.

Motion pictures are a business, but also an art and a science.
Once in a while, we should put the art first. The cultural landmark of the Wizard of Oz is one of the most profound in American cinema.
After all, isn't the MGM motto "Ars Gratia Artis" or Art for Art's sake?
