It's not always needed, however, the Deck's battery isn't that great for long gaming sessions, which is why a Dock is generally recommended.

You can also stream wirelessly to the Steam Link hardware, any TV that can run the Steam Link app, a Raspberry Pi running the Link app, an android box running the Link app, or an HTPC connected to a TV. In my experience, it is pretty seamless and has minimal lag, but YMMV based on your home network setup.

You can also plug an HDMI to USB-C Cable directly, but Bad idea, the battery will drop and die really fast if you don't use an external power supply.

Get a dock. There are really good third party ones for like $30 if you don’t want to spring for the official one

I have a wall plug (like a phone charger block) that has an HDMI output on it, charges the Steam Deck while outputting to a TV or Monitor all in a tiny size.

Even with yhe deck OLED like mine this syill eats battery so yes a dock is always better

You need a dock regarding to play on it the monitor AND to let it charge since the battery isnt the best

you can just buy a usb c to hdmi cable you just dont get the added usb ports to connect your controller after the batt3rey gets to low and no Keyboard and mouse unless they are bluetooth.
