A day trip to Whittier, Alaska ( 4K HD )

Views of the town of Whittier in southern Alaska and its true beauty. Home to about 200 people, it is a dead end station on the Alaskan Railroad and a stop on the state maritime highway. Most of the residents of Whittier live in the Begich Tower, a "town under one roof" high rise. In this video you can see some public facilities, marina, the port and more, including a one-lane tunnel shared with the railroad line. Whittier is a unique place, it has its own distinctive charm, there's something special in small towns in Alaska, especially in those integrated into mass tourism and fishing. Whittier found the sustainable population level, floating around 200 people in the past 40 years and is absolutely not decaying like some of the small towns in the continental U.S. down south. But the solitude and chillness of the place give the town an image of a lonely fisherman living in his hut by the sea, not thinking high of the busy civilization. Whittier is strong and the people living here are strong. The place is amazing.

Whittier is a really beautiful place. I lived and worked in Portage Alaska, which is a dead town between Whittier and Girdwood.
