Alaskan Town That Lives In One Building (Isolated From The World)

Hello everyone, Ruhi Çenet here. Imagine the building you live in is not just your home but it is also your entire city. In this building, all the essential needs you can think of are gathered under one roof. People go to the grocery store, the post office, or even the notary in a heartbeat by just taking an elevator ride. Despite the storm outside and the giant snowbanks, the kids living here get to school through the underground tunnel in their building.

Located in the south of Alaska, Whittier, is a coastal city hidden between towering mountains and the ocean. With an area of approximately 51 square kilometers or 20 square miles, it has only one residential complex for its entire population.

Check out my other documentaries:

Inmagine you don't want to go to school and pretending to be sick. You can't do anything. They will know

This sounds honestly like an ideal candidate for a reality show. I can't imagine the drama of an entire town living together in one building.

Seems like a good idea for a movie especially with the train timing, the environment and isolation

This video makes me feel grateful for my freedom to go out, for the sunshine, the nice weather, the trees and the parks, the shops where I can find everything I want, the outdoor cafes and the restaurants by the sea.

I visited Whittier in August 2001. My girlfriend at that time was good friends with a couple that lived in that building. Their apartment overlooked the shipping docks and railway. At that time of year that small town gets very busy with tourist from the cruise ships and curiosity seekers. I recall a couple of restaurants close to that building. It seriously was the most bizarre place I’ve ever visited.

It may sound weird, but I actually love small and confined spaces. This would be like a dream home to me.

I love that you did this on Alaska, but people watching this, please know we have over 700K people living in Alaska. I'm an Alaska resident and was born here in 1986. We don't all live like this though some people choose to do so. Most Alaskans live in Anchorage, Fairbanks and other cities and have "normal" lives with real buildings, schools etc 😂

I recently stayed here in August 2023 and was actually surprised how quiet it was. It was a basic apartment that met our groups needs for the night we stayed there.
