Engineer Reacts To - $3400 Grammy Winning Home Studio

In this video, I react to Steve Freeman's video on how all you need is $3400 to have a grammy winning home studio. There is nothing wrong with the gear he recommends. It's the way he serves up the content that struck a chord with me. I push on my channel that it's NOT about the gear! That's not going to make you a grammy winning producer. But instead, I focus on learning your craft. Practicing, and making mistakes. It takes years to develop this craft. And no gear is going to be some magic bullet. grammy winning home studio

Whatever the gear you buy, the most important is getting a good chair, because to win a Grammy you will be sitting a very long time in it (years)..

If I had a dollar for every time that guy said 3400 dollars, I'd have 3400 dollars.

Just a reminder that Steve Lacy was Grammy nominated with songs he wrote on his iPhone 6, built in mic and irig guitar adapter.

"A bad engineer can make great equipment sound horrible, and a great engineer can make bad equipment sound amazing."

*FACTS.*

I just realized he doesn’t even care what gear you buy. Just as long as you spend $3400.

I mixed my Grammy nominated record "Teardrops On My Guitar" in a cement mixer that I rented from Home Depot. A pro will always be a pro, no matter what gear you give me.

as the CEO of a budding record label and recording everything Sidoti is perfectly spot on. steve's gotta be getting sponsored for this video. i started mixing on reaper, keep going. stay persistent. never be afraid of constructive criticism and equally be mindful of not taking criticism from people you wouldn't take advice from. use the gear you got until it becomes the only thing holding you back, as your budget allows. careful financial practices will help you grow as an artist and avoid being the stereotypical "starving artist". good luck and godspeed to all.

First of all, I can see how wining a Grammy may be rewarding and amazing. My main problem with Freeman's video is the emphasis on winning a Grammy as the goal everybody should pursue. I, for myself, am entirely satisfied with putting out a mix I'm proud of out there. I don't care if it leads me to winning a Grammy or not (more than likely won't), I'm making music because I like it, not to be better than everyone else. Am I on my own thinking this way?

Billie Elish is an industry plant. Her dad works in Hollywood. MixBus TV covered her story and then all of a sudden his channel got hacked lol. Her music started out in a bedroom but her brother had already been working with top producers on making an album. Look at the interview Pensado did with their engineer, that guy pointed out that they had a team working on their music which I think was funny because it was almost like he didn’t get the memo on this whole “BEDROOM PRODUCER” story.

My teacher in my Electronic Music class drilled in us that it's not what daw you use, or plug-ins or gear; it's what's in your head. That no matter what you use will make great music, or mix a great song. The tools are just to help us express what we already have in our head.

Someone recently commented to not listen to me because I have over 50K of equipment in my room. Holy crap! I Not even close. You can read in the description what gear I have. I make the point in this video that once you learn the tools and learn how to engineer then you can upgrade your gear as I have. But if you think good gear makes you a good engineer then you are wrong. A good engineer can take good gear and make beautiful music. But a good engineer can use anything and make it good. Don’t hide behind the excuse that your not getting good results because you haven’t spent enough money!! Learn your craft. Learn gain structure. Learn how to use eq and compression. Learn your speakers. Treat your room. Once you get to a certain level that the gear in hindering you, then think about upgrading.

Ha... even Grammy winning songs are not the BEST songs or the best art being made. Getting a Grammy should not be the ultimate goal of your art.

I’m amazed by all of the ‘black box’ solutions out there. I’ve been studying my ass off to learn about recording, mixing and mastering. A big thing I’ve learned is that I’ve got a lot to learn.

for someone who doesn't know anything, this can really do damage to someone's pockets. I was thoroughly with his video and was very upset. I have a 300 dollar set up and my music sounds ass because I am not the best engineer and I don't have the best acoustics. I am working on my craft and getting better acoustics and having better skills for engineering are my top priorities.

This warms my heart man! The genuine reaction of someone upset about something they care for. Cheers @sidoti sound

Bro. You are absolutely right. My uncle always said it’s not the equipment it’s the person behind the equipment.
